The fortress is seen from far away, when one will just enter the city. It's impressive, or thou it's not so special in terms of architecture. The central city part one is renovated and looks really nice. The other parts unfortunately are mostly in a poor state and looks like falling apart. Still, that is a historical part, can be... More

While in Smolensk we stopped here and went up to the top of this wall. It was a bit dangerous going up the steps but once at the top the view was great if the city.

If you go to Smolensk and not head to the museums or war monuments (there's a lot of them there), then this is the main attraction for you. A great example of the Russian medieval fortress masonry, in different stages of ruining and restoration. The wall is divided in several sections - some of it more nicely repaired, some not... More

Astonishing building, lasting 6 kilometers, standing here for almost 4 centuries. Was build by efforts of all cities of Russia, suffered a lot of wars (with Poland, Napoleon invasion and second World War) and still alive. You can climb on some towers and walls to see amazing landscapes and feel youself old-time strelez, defending the city during the siege. Major... More

Smolensk Fortress is picturesque. It's an construction that was protecting Russia for centuries and centuries. So, that is undoubtedly a Russian place of natural and cultural beauty. But, visiting it, you encounter a paradox. Such symbolic place is neglected. No one wall fragment has been turned into museum. There is no official entrance onto the wall. Some walls are destroying... More

We really enjoyed walking around the fortress and even found great places to take pictures of our four teen children. Amazing back drop and architecture.

The fortress is surrounding the whole central part of Smolensk and is a must-see. It has survived until now only partly, but still looks very impressive. There is a good museum in Gromovaya Tower. But if you go to the Eastern part towards Oryol (Eagle) Tower, there is a possibility to climb to the fortress and to walk along its... More

This ancient structure have made the strongest impression on me in Smolensk. The huge fortress wall puts you into the atmosphere of ancient old Russian settlements. Wall's restored remains can be found in various places of the city, most of them are in good condition. And in some places (if you ask at the local), you can even get into... More
