I saw it in mid-May, and it deeply affected me. Unquestionably among the most exquisite in this country!
The idea behind it comes from an old Gallic myth that a Gaul could only be considered a man if he descended from an eagle's nest carrying its egg.
Obviously, in 1812, La Grande Armée blew it with a Russian eagle:))
I heartily advise all tourists to visit the monument.

Having visited Smolensk
I found the amount of History dating back to 12th Century ,with the 6 kl wall around the impressive Cathedral were all of Russian Priests Bishops are trained, the Cathedral has an impressive culture of history inlaid with Gold on the inside ,the museums are all over the City,,the main railway links going through Smolensk from Moscow travelling direct to Europe ,,roads from Moscow are pretty good with a traveling time if 5 hours
2 railway stations covering most cities within Russia
Well worth a visit to see the Historic culture of the City
No airport at present

We visited in fall, so the rainbow of leaves made a beautiful backdrop to this monument. Smolensk has been in a lot of wars, due to its location.

Surprise, a war memorial in a Russian city. This one honours the war of 1812, one of the largest wars that has taken place in the area.

The city I love, my grandparents lived there and I spent many happy days in Smolensk.
I remember the monument from childhood, I recommend walking nearby, feeling the power and strength of the monument, the steadfastness of Smolensk, which survived many scary and heroic days.

My wife and I, as well as our daughter and five-year-old granddaughter, admired it in the first half of February. We came to Smolensk for a week just to get some fresh air.
A lot has been written about him here. Correct and not very correct. I will only add that the author of the project, engineer Lieutenant Colonel Nikolai Sergeevich Schutzman (the son of a Moscow gardener, a native of Germany), was inspired by a French legend, which says that an ancient Gaul, in order to become a man and a warrior, had to climb into an eagle’s nest and bring from it egg.
Emperor Nicholas II not only discovered this masterpiece, but also approved his project, which won an open competition in which more than thirty applicants participated.
It is strange that the “fighters for the happiness of the proletarians” did not break it: the names of the generals - “tsarist satraps”, eagles, coats of arms are “anti-Soviet”. And not a single sickle or even a hammer. Ulyanov is not on the mountain; a clearly non-partisan bird is fighting the poacher.
In general, God saved, no less.

The monument is located in the park in memory of heroes opposite the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. Erected in honor of the heroes of the war of 1812 in Goa.
