Spello is an absolute joy. We loved walking around it. There are Roman arches and walls that are a constant reminder of the town's great history and the current citizens' pride in their past. The Piazza della Republica is one example of this and provides great views of the Umbrian countryside from its elevated position.

This is the main piazza in the historic city of Spello. Meet people, have a coffee and enjoy the shops.

Piazza della Repubblica is a large open public square where the Town Hall is situated, it could be considered to be the mid-way point from top to bottom of the town. I'm afraid I must disagree with most British reviewers and go along with some of my Italian friends when I say that this is a pretty poor effort of a Piazza. There is no doubt that Spello is an attractive town with lots of old and characterful buildings, which makes it so much of a mystery as to why the central Piazza ended up with such horrid buildings as the post office and police office. They are like something you'd find in Coventry or Milton Keynes in the 1970s!

Like all the piazza's in Perugia, the Piazza della Repubblica always seems to have something going on. From market stalls to merry-go-rounds. It's a great place to have a coffee or glass of wine at one of the local cafes and just sit.
