On a short holiday which included Orvieto, Pienza, Civita di Bagnoregio and Pitigliano, Spello was the one I fell in love with most. Even in winter, there were lots of flowers and plants everywhere. The streets were clean but still atmospheric, and the locals were friendly, even when my wife asked for a Montepulciano wine! 'That's from Tuscany!' said the shocked bar owner 'We have Umbrian wines!'

5 miles along the hillside from Assisi, this is another picture-postcard village, kept immaculately clean. In mid July, the tourists were mostly Italian. Some beautiful churches (Santa Maria di Maggiore especially) and the Pinoteca is highly recommended too.

Consigliato !

It is a little village in the heart of Umbria . It’s quite easy to reach thanks to the highway that goes straight to the threshold of Spello. There are large parking places where to leave the car just around the entrance of the historical centre. The narrow streets are very clean and characteristic thanks to colourful flowers and plants in every corner, churches and historical buildings! It’s a place with plenty of panoramic and culinary treasures which are a pleasure to see. 1 hour and half will surely be enough to have a walk in the amazing streets, to take some pictures and enjoy a delicious ice cream!
It’s worth a visit !

Spello is an ancient town of Italy, in the province of Perugia in east central Umbria, on the lower southern flank of Mt. Subasio. The old walled town lies on a regularly sloping ridge that eventually meets the plain. From the top of the ridge, Spello commands a good view of the Umbrian plain towards Perugia. The homes and flowers are so amazing and peaceful. Several restaurants in this town, the food was excellent.

We just happened to spend the evening in Spello, on a drive back to our B&B in the Assisi area, and are so glad we did. In comparison with Assisi, Spello feels more like a real town where people live. And it's gorgeous. Drop-dead views from different parts, beautiful winding narrow streets. We were fortunate with our timing and looked into the Chiesa di San Severino (near the top of the town) where monks and worshippers were singing.

We spent a few nights in Terra dei Santi Country House just outside Spello, and this was a perfect base to explore Umbria with a car.
Spello itself is very charming - with free parking just outside the walls near Via della Liberazione, from where a combination of elevator and steps transports you to Piazza della Republica smack in the centre. Spello is tiny, but exudes a unique charm with little alleyways and balconies lined with flowerpots (unfortunately the Infiorate di Spello was slated later in the year in June).
We spent hours soaking it all in, admiring views from along the walls (and the Belvedere) and dropping by a little ceramic store or church along the way as we meandered aimlessly. Lots of little taverns, restaurants and wine bars where along the streets to enjoy local cuisine and produce. An added bonus is the opportunity to visit the town of Coppolino, an easy drive uphill.

We spent an Autumn afternoon in the historic centre of Spello, which is a very pretty little hilltop village in Umbria. It houses characteristic, charming stone, historic properties in the ancient centre. Very clean with a labyrinth of steep, cobbled lanes filled with beautiful flowers and plants. It was quiet during our walk around and unfortunately due to the specific nature of our visit, we did not have enough time to explore the village at length or leisure, because we did as a quick day trip from Rome to Assisi and stopped off en route back to Rome which is two hours away by car. Would love to visit again & spend some quality time!

We did not book a walking tour. We just wondered around and walked the narrow streets and many hills. Such a lovely village built on the hillside

Not too far from Perugia and Assisi, this small town is often overlooked. This ancient walled town is really charming and leisurely walk up the cobblestone path is awesome. Postcard views everyway, real town life. Must try the truffles. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore was closed due to restoration work.

We spent a few hours walking Spello it is wonderful

It must be amazing when the flowers are in full bloom and the festival is on

Even in October the little gardens in houses on balconies are picturesque

There are many winding streets , which end in great views out over Umbria

We went on a week day so it was fairly quiet , I imagine it would be full of people on weekends and in the main tourist season

You can sense the sense of pride in the town , the streets are clean the people working in shops , cafes really friendly

Glad we went
