The Londrangar Basalt Cliffs are the remains of a crater which has been eroded to its present form by the sea. Nice walk along the cliffs with several viewpoints from which you can see the famous Londrangar rock formation. The two large pillars towering over their surroundings at the shore near Hellnar in Snæfellsnes are Lóndrangar. The higher one is 75 meters high, and the shorter is 61 meters high. Seen from a long distance, it looks like an enormous castle has emerged from the sea. Nice place at the coast with some greatly formed rocks. Beautiful views of the coast. This place is said to belong to the elves living in the area. On these cliffs, puffins and fulmars have their nests. Beautiful rock formation of the southern coast of the peninsula. Great place for a visit. These rocks are awesome. Pictures won't unfortunately show this , you have to see it on your own. Must visit while in West Iceland. It is a hidden gem.

It was a clear sunny day when we visited which made it even more beautiful. We enjoyed the view, the walk and especially the visitor center. The displays were well placed and informative with just the right amount of detail. The ranger was knowledgeable and helpful. The view was amazing! Definitely worth the time to stop.

Most people would recommend this hike in one direction or the other. The most useful advice I found was parking at Malarrif and then do a return hike, ie, Malarrif-Londragar-Malarrif. However, I modified this slightly and this is my suggestion (if you are driving from Arnapstapi):
1. Park at Londrangar, walk to the viewing platform to see the basalt cliffs.
2. Drive a short distance further on to Malarrif, visit the excellent Tourist Information Centre. The toilet is open 24 hours.
3. Walk towards Londrangar as far as you wish to view the basalt cliffs, depending on your time availability.
4. Do a walk along the Malarrif beach as well. We

To view these rock pillars look for a small side road marked 'Malarrif'. There is ample parking and a large adventure playground. There are toilets and a small shop with refreshments. It was a beautiful hot sunny day, stunning blue sky and intense blue sea. Pleasant easy walking with views of the ancient lava flows running down Snaefellsjokull.

The drive on gravel roads and a walk to the cliffs are worth the trip to view the puffins and other sea birds performing. Very windy so photographing needs care not to tumble over the cliffs. I laid down and it was good stability for me and my camera. The puffins seem to enjoy their photos being taken but don't startle them.

We weren't much thrilled of this place. We would rather recommend to make a shore walk in Arnarstrapi rather than stopping by Londrangar.

We paid a quick visit to see the Londrangar Rock Cliffs. We were fortunate enough to have a gorgeous day for the visit. Spectacular views! Try to go earlier in the day to avoid the crowds.

If, like us, you decide to drive around the island, you'll probably end up driving by here. Our first night's lodging was very close to here, so it was impossible to avoid. While nice, it's no where close to many of the other attractions in this beautiful country. Stop for a photo if you're on the peninsula but don't make a special trip based on the glowing reviews.

Thanks for reading. If you’ve found this helpful I’ll appreciate a thumbs up below.

These cliffs and massive rock formations are easily reached from the Malariff visitor center parking lot. The visitors center has a helpful ranger on site, good clean restrooms and informative exhibits about the area. The beach at Malariff, the beautiful lighthouse and the nearby Londranger cliffs make this a good stop along the national park road. There are many trails that lead from the visitors center to the main attractions. The trails aren't very clearly marked but it's easy to find your way to and from the parking area as all the attractions are visible from there.
