Beautiful little village.... magnificent view. The little church is a wonderful place in the evening to watch over the water and sence the beauty and peace of Iceland. Every day on this Island feels like one spent in paradise.

This cozy, coastal church, built in 1945, was built on the site of an older church dating back to 1833. The church itself is made for a small rural community that gathers together despite the sparse, wide-spread distribution. The church holds 40 people at so at the most, and the cemetery next to the church gives a sense of the history of these people who live on what seems to be the edge of the world. Surrounded by spectacular views of the mountains to the east and the sea to the south and west, Hellnar church is the site of a rumoured siting of the spirit of the Virgin Mary, near a coldwater spring nearby. Located within easy walking distance of the Primus restaurant and several lookout points on the ocean, the church is in some ways very typical of the country churches that dot the Icelandic landscape, and unique with its regional history.

This beautiful, simple church is a place of perfect peace for quiet contemplation on a very windy coastline. It was a short walk from our cottage and we visited a couple of times. It is currently having some refurbishment work done internally. The current church has been in situ for 30+ years, the last one having been lifted off its foundations by the wind! Worth a couple of minutes of anyone’s time

As I gazed upon this church in complete solitude, I contemplated the life of the early settlers to this region. In fact, there is a story of one of them posted in front of the church. It's a serene setting, a place to quiet your soul. The church itself was not open.

We saw the church up on the hill and couldn't wait to explore. We just saw from the outside - don't know if you can get in. The grounds and cemetery were fun to explore and the view was nice. There is a parking lot at the top of the hill right beside the church.

In a country dotted with White Churches sporting red roofs, this one is par for the course. Nothing special, but I took a nice photo.

We liked the church and if you pass by the area we recommend to stop there but we wouldn’t go there just for the church.

We stayed at fosshotel hellnar and saw the church from our room. It looks great sitting there in the landscape, with snæfellsjökull glacier behind.

There is a wonderful circular coastal walk of about 5-6 km between Hellnar and Arnastapi. We stayed at a property just beyond the nearby Foss Hotel and headed down past this photogenic church and graveyard. It wasn't open when we were there but it was very atmospheric. If you go down the side, past the graveyard, you come to a car park. Follow on down and you come to a small café overlooking a pretty cave which has stepping stones part way across. Carry on the walk over a short stretch of boardwalk and then continue along the coast over the rugged path. Inland views are of fascinating moss covered lava fields and lava ‘trolls’ are signposted along the route. The coastal views are amazing with numerous rock stacks and basalt columns which continue to Arnastapi where there is a large troll statue and viewing points over the rock formations including Gatlettur – an arch rock. On your return you obviously get to see everything from a different perspective which is equally beautiful.
