About
The OPINEL "Museum" is housed in the former cutlery works of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. The forge, which has kept its stamps and hammer, houses an exhibition tracing the history of the famous Savoyard knife of the OPINEL family; a video visit allows visitors to safely view the current factory and all the different manufacturing steps involved.

Commercial but nevertheless interesting
Aug 2020
The museum part is quite interesting and gives a good idea of the creation and evolution of the firm. It seems however that the main attraction is the ‘Museum shop’ ( that is the factory outlet!), where most people spend their time. One can understand them as the offer is very temping. Note however that prices there are not the best!

Small but interesting, especially if you already know the knives

Bit of a pilgrimage site for those who love Opinel knives. Great to see the history, how they are made and all the models and products. Museum is very small, doesn't take much more than an hour. Wished it was more connected to the current factory, though. Would have liked to have seen the real production too.

A cutting museum!

I highly recommend this museum about the famous knife to travellers! We learn a lot of things about the production (with old equipment) and the history of the Opinel. I really appreciate the warm hospitality. All houses of the region possess one, so it's a place that you can't forget if you stay in Maurienne during few days. It's a tradition to eat a typical cheese with this typical knife. On top of that, this museum is free! You can buy an Opinel after your visit, and there is a whole variety of this knife. From my point of view I liked enjoy this museum, I could even do a personalized knife with my name. I think I will go back soon.

Knife museum

Definitely worth wandering through to see old equipment and how knives are made. Everything is in French so we couldn't read the signage. Store has all sorts of opinel knives to buy. Worth going to if you have 45 minutes

Sharpest museum ever!
Apr 2017 • Friends
A home without an Opinel is as empty as any right wing - or Tea party - politician, seriously; all their knives/products Are without exception of High Quality, practical in use and very Nice to look at. My favourite mushroomknife is from Opinel, my best casual ones for any use in my kitchen is the same, and one could go mad and end up broke in the shop next to he museum... That said, This was more about their production and shop than the museum, but fair enough... I love the Opinel's!!!

Museum is well done - step by step of the history and production of Opinel knifes. I will forever look at my knifes differently.
Museum is free too

Must see for every Opinel fan!

Definitely a must see for every Opinel-lover. Especially the movie about the history is worth seeing! And it is also great to see what other knifes they make apart from the classic one.

Very agreeable to visit, full of interesting information about Opinel and the Maurienne Valley. It's free to go in and has a great little shop to buy original Opinel wares.

Worth a Stop

Although the museum is small it is very well arranged. Even if you know nothing of the Opinel Knife to warrants a short visit to learn. After the museum visit you can opt for a great lunch at one of many nearby restaurants. We did in fact purchase a knife but for a much better price elsewhere.

French Knife History
Jun 2015
Took a tour (while the new museum was still under construction) and met two generations of the Opinel family, who were very fun! Bought knives here for all of the men in my family and graciously was given one myself as a gift from the Rotarians of St. Jean de Maurienne, which I carry in my car and is excellent for French-inspired picnic baskets. It was fascinating to learn the history and see the old machinery, and by the way, ALL the men in my family LOVED their gifts. A great day trip, especially for knife lovers.
