We didn't know when we planned our trip! They are very dry until April/May when it is very rainy and the lakes fill up. We hiked a long way to get to the one lake with water (Peixes) which wasn't pretty at all and not super clean either with all of the visitors it is getting this time of year. So be careful when you plan your trip! They will also warn you: there is no water, no bathrooms, no food available here. Don't forget a kanga to sit on and towels or kangas to dry off with.

Did Lagoa Azul on day 1 and Lagoa Bonita on day 2. Lagoa bonita should’ve and could’ve been done twice- it’s absolutely stunning and surprisingly untouched for the amount of visitors that come each day. AMAZING- simply a must see.

Lençóis is kinda big. Our starting point of Barreirinhas, and than Lagoa Bonita, nowhere we saw any floating plastic bags that ruined the majesty of nature. Here, we did, we cringed.

Both lagoons are beautiful and I recommend the visit. In case of Lagoa Bonita, you have to be prepared for 75m of inclination on the dunes. There is a rope to help the visitors in the end of the climb and I have also seen an alternative way for those who have any kind of locomotive deficiency. These 2 tours are made separatedly by the agencies. When you go to Lagoa Azul, you visit other lagoons around, and the same for Lagoa Bonita, but never both of them in the same visit due to the time. I recommend the agency São Paulo Ecoturismo, but you can also ask for help in your hotel (it is generally cheaper than scheduling in advance). Remember you shall schedule your tours always until 1100 a.m. the previous day of the tour. Besides, do not forget to take suncreen, hats, sunglasses, water and a snack. The car travel until the lagoons can take almost 1 hour and a half, but the guides say it takes 40 minutes because they don't consider the stops we get while picking up the other visitors in the hotels and waiting for the barge to cross the river.

We first experienced the dunes and lagoon on a walk from Atins. We were alone on the walk (apart from our guide) and so had the whole place to ourselves - very tranquil and a special experience. When you visit Bonito or Azul lagoon there are a whole bunch of tours there at the same time so the place is swamped with people, which obviously affects the tranquility of the place. But the lagoons are stunning and you can always walk a little further to the next lagoon to find one less visited and even to yourselves. Even though you are sold a "sunset' tour, be aware that your driver will most likely hussle you back into the truck/jeep before sunset (and certainly before the full post-sunset colours come out) as they are all in a rush to get back to town and to get across the ferry

The most popular lakes have their reason to be it, huge, beautiful, colourful and unique. It is a must go however there’s plenty others to see.

Bonita lake is unreal! The view is simply stunning. There is an initial steep climb but if you can- its worth it.

These are "Must Go" rides if you go to Lençóis. I did Blue lagoon by the morning and Beautiful lagoon by the afternoon. They cost R$70,00 and R$90,00 respectively. Something about 20 bucks. Do Beautiful lagoon in the afternoon because of the sunset view. If you are out of time, go just for the Beautiful lagoon (Lagoa Bonita) but a do recommend both.

I’m a nature lover and Brazil is just an amazing country. The Amazon, Bonito, the Pantanal, Fernando de Noronha and many, many other splendid places blessed with outstanding nature. The Lençois Maranhenses is one of the special spots. The crystal clear lagoons formed in the middle of the incredible white sand dunes are absolutely amazing and a must see! There are the famous lagoons, but all around there are smaller and beautiful crystal clear warm water paradises. To fully enjoy it you will need, at least, a full day, leaving early from the hotel. Our kids loved it!!

Clear waters and stunning landscaping. The turquoise water in the middle of the dunes makes the plane (the entire Lençóis Maranhenses including Atins) a unique place, really breath taking. I dare to say it is the most beautiful place I've ever seen.

Choveu bastante neste ano?
