    redefine your dune concept
Impressive place, one of the planet's natural heritage sites. Immense dunes and lagoons with crystal clear waters, all with the heat of the northeast. It's really worth knowing. Redefine your concept of dunes.

    Surreally beautiful
We crossed with Junior, mediated by Carlos Queimada. It was 5 incredible days with breathtaking landscapes and a lot of learning about nature and a way of living so different from mine (I think this is something that really enriched my experience). I am so grateful for the affection of the people who gave space in their homes to welcome us with kindness.

Lunar scenarios. One of the top 10 world natural wonders
Amazing lunar scenarios. My suggestion is to prefer Santo Amaro Lencois than the Lencois near to Barreirinhas. Near to Barreirinhas the best is no doubt Lagoa Bonita while Lagoa Azul can be skipped.

    It's too late in mid-July.
If you're looking for a view with lots of waterlogged lagoons like the one in the Guide, June is the best time to do so, just after the rainy season ends. I visited in mid-July, and there were only about 3-4 lagoons where I could swim, as far as the 4WD tour was concerned. The rest is barely any water left and you can see the base of the water grass, so it looks unphotogenic. However, in the first place, the dune area of Lençois is a large area by the sea where some vegetation is thin, and there is a green area on the sand along the way from San Luis. Therefore, rather than being completely white, to be honest, I was concerned about the traces of vegetation. There is also a large wind farm area around, and the windmill is reflected in the distance. It is certainly a beautiful spot, but I have the impression that I caught a glimpse of why it is said to be a disappointing tourist destination.

Full, indispensable but that could be much better.
A spectacular landscape worth visiting. In the season it is quite crowded and it is difficult to take a walk without meeting with (many) other groups. The following points may be recurring to all operators, but I think they are points that you can improve to offer a differentiated service. First of all, I found that the training of the guides was very weak with most of them conforming to take the tourists there and there without giving much explanation. Another point is, there are probably demarcated routes, so they take you to the lugars that everybody goes and are full. There are people who fit, but it's worth walking 10 minutes to find a place away from the muvuca. That a good Guide would have noticed. Companies adhere very much to the basics, for example: in Maranhão it makes a bad heat, I think providing a bottle of water for the passengers as a courtesy would be glad. The company needs to focus on offering experiences and not just tours. Regarding the food during the trips, I find the service abusive. The meals at the various locations are not bad, and are well served. But the price is abusive for what is offered. Again, it could be much better, especially by the amount you pay.

    Too beautiful place!
The photos do not make sense to the vastness of the place. It's very beautiful. Despite the heat sale quite. The waters in the lagoons are warm because they are shallow. Some are deep, guides warn when some do not walk. Sand doesn't burn the foot, it can go barefoot. The dark glasses, sunscreen and hat are muuuuito welcome. No alcoholic beverages in the park. Bring your water.

    Barreirinhas was just magical.
My recent visit to Barreirinhas was simply magical. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed by the warmth and friendliness of the local people. Barreirinhas is the gateway to the stunning Lençóis Maranhenses, and let me tell you that the photos do not do them justice. Seeing in person those undulating white dunes contrasting with the crystal clear lagoons is an experience that will remain etched in my memory forever. We were lucky enough to make several excursions, including an amazing 4x4 crossing through the National Park and a boat ride along the Preguiças River. Each activity was well organized and allowed us to deeply connect with the unique nature of the region. The diversity of landscapes and the sense of peace that you breathe in every corner is incomparable. In addition, the local cuisine was a real delight. We tasted traditional dishes that stood out for their freshness and flavor, always accompanied by the characteristic hospitality of the region. Without a doubt, Barreirinhas exceeded all our expectations. We are sure we will return to continue exploring this natural paradise. If you are looking for a combination of adventure, relaxation and natural beauty, Barreirinhas is the perfect destination. We are already planning our next visit!

    Absolutely wonderful
How wonderful is this our Brazil...if you have never been to Maranhans sheets don't waste time...go. It's at least stunning, especially by Santo Amaro. The landscape is something of magical dunes that give the feeling of being on another planet, crystal clear lagoons. Impermissible.

    Unforgettable tour
A spectacular tour of Maranhans sheets from Santo Amaro. From transfer we went to Santo Amaro, from where we started the tour to the Circuit Bethânia with the Lagoas Andorinha, Bethânia and Gaivota. Some already almost dry, but the stops conducted by the Guide in other lagoons was enough to present the beauty of the place. Spectacular dives in the lagoons and a fantastic slide through the dunes. Top too!!! We spent lunch in the village of Bethania, accessed by a small boat in a river with clear waters. Super capricious lunch!!

There were small rainstorms, but it didn't bother.
A unique experience in Brazil, but keep an eye on some important details. The time of year makes a difference. Not only because of possible rains that will mess your walks, but also because everything changes according to the period: the color of the sand, the transparency of the water and even the prices. There were small rainstorms, but it didn't bother. It was also not the ideal time to visit the Lençóis, according to the locals. It is not possible to get to the National Park alone, you need a guide or group, it is mandatory, always inform in hotels or guesthouses. Barreirinhas (the city that functions as QG of the Lençóis) is a very interesting town, everyone friendly and concerned, fair and honest people. You can ask without fear. Most prices are tabulated.

This place was stunning!

Our family of four from Canada visited the dunes in June 2023. As I could not find very much information in English before leaving, we arranged private tours through Brazil Ecotours. Did we absolutely need to do this? Maybe not, but it made it very easy to have everything arranged and have an English speaking contact if needed. There is definitely not a lot of English spoken in this area of Brazil.

Was the long travel day to get here worth it? Absolutely!! 100 percent. The dunes are gorgeous and the lagoon water is lovely to swim in as it is clear and refreshing in the heat. We did a private full day jeep tour from Barreirinhas from 9 am until 6 pm. The jeep ride is about 1.5 hours and very, very bumpy but great fun - we laughed so much but definitely don't go on this if you have back problems. Also, we appreciated that it was private as many jeeps looked very full and crowded - I would guess that private jeeps can be arranged once you arrive as well. Our driver and guide avoided many of the other groups and we were often alone. We had the freedom to walk as much as we liked. We spent a lot of time walking and swimming in the lagoons and enjoyed every minute. The sand is so white and soft and cool to touch (we had expected it to be very hot). There was a stop for lunch and the food was very tasty, especially since it is so isolated. We had chicken and fish and rice and beans. This is paid by cash only and was about 250 reals for four of us.

The next day we did the four hour boat trip to Atins (privately). They stopped at the same stops all the boats go to - a lighthouse, some dunes, a place for lunch, some mangroves and then Atins. Again, our driver timed it so we were leaving as larger groups were arriving. Lunch is cash only.

We spent the next full day in Atins. Here, the dunes are much closer to town and the morning exploring them was followed by lunch and then time in the town and at our lovely hotel.

The last day was a transfer by 1.5 hours boat to Barreirinhas and then the drive and two flights to Rio.

It is worth going for more than one day (as I read some people do) and also worth going to both Barreirinhas and Atins as they are very different towns and the boat ride between them is lovely. It was nice to have more time in the dunes (in Atins) after the first day as they are something we will never see again. So, we had three days in the dunes area and two travel days on either end. An extra day in Atins would have been nice as well.

Definitely worth going to see and truly a once in a lifetime experience.

The place is incredible. As we visited the park in January and after a dry period, there was only one lagoon to visit. We went in the afternoon and stayed until sunset.
The lagoons are busiest between June and August and different tours are offered, lasting from 1 to 4 days.
We did the Bate e Volta trip with American Trip and we recommend it. It takes almost 4 hours from São Luís to Barreirinhas, where the Buriti guesthouse is located (support point). After a lunch break, we headed to the park, a 16km journey. The drivers are very professional and the guides provide important information about the region.

What a magical experience. Make sure you visit when the lagoons have appeared after the rains. The colours and contrasts between the white, white dunes and the turquoise lagoons is beautiful. The walk around the dunes, the swims in the lagoons and the crazy drives over the dunes was wonderful.
Highly recommend this trip.

Although the crossing to lencois is hard, it is worth it when you arrive
Wearing rubber flip-flops, because from a 4x4 you go to a boat but you get into the water
The set of dunes full of water is spectacular, and the sunset on the dunes is very beautiful

Climbing the dunes and coming face to face with the blue lagoons is impressive.
The lagoons, besides being beautiful, are great for swimming. A trip for the whole family, we found many children and elderly people enjoying this natural beauty. It's worth waiting for the sunset on some less-crowded dune. All the guides were great and very attentive. Even though we are in Barreirinhas, I recommend at least one day in Santo Amaro and Atins. Long live the Northeast!

I have been wanting to come here for over 10 years so my expectations were very high. Lencois Maranhenses did not disappoint. This natural wonder is surprisingly unknown to international tourism. I had a difficult time finding any information on this place in English. I visiting Lagoa Bonita, Lagoa Azul, and the dunes around Santo Amaro. All were very beautiful and the landscape was otherworldly. No English is spoken in this part of Brazil so tours are operated in Portuguese. I just went with the flow and everything worked out perfect. Lencois Maranhenses is a true unknown gem and one of the most amazing natural wonders I have ever seen. I visited at the end of June and the lagoons were full. This place is very remote and not easy to get to, but well worth it if you can.

This national Park exceeded my expectations. Beautiful sand dunes with amazing lagoons. We got daily tours arranged by Pe n'areia ecoturismo, and a couple of days were with guides from Vale dos lençois. This park is very unique, jaw-dropping!

One of the things to do in life is definitely a visit to lencois maranhenses. We visited, with sao paulo ecoadventures, lagoon prata in the morning and blue lagoon in the afternoon. Although the lencois weren't full of water the show is superb and I have to tell the truth difficult to describe. For a long time you can walk on white sand dunes and dive into crystal clear blue waters. The sunset, if you are lucky enough to see it, is exceptional. The jeep trip in the forest to get to the lencois is also very nice.

Our family crossed the Lençóis in three days, sleeping in the oases of Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos with the guide Jefferson Castro, leaving Atins and arriving in Santo Amaro. Jefferson is an excellent professional. It's a little tiring, but the landscapes are stunning and the contact with nature is exceptional.

When we arrived at the Park it was worth the effort. The place is really beautiful, but getting there is a real marathon. I believe that after we went to the sheets we would recommend it and straight from the airport. And explore Santo Amaro Barreirinhas and Atins further. We stayed in Barreirinha in a really cool guesthouse on the banks of Dório Preguiça, which is beautiful and huge. We took a walk along the river and made two unnecessary stops: a visit to the lighthouse and another to some small dunes with very empty lagoons. The same place that has some little monkeys. Then we went to Caburé beach. Thanks for swimming in the sea, which was really nice that day. The only annoying thing is that on the beaches of zMaranha you can ride cars, quad bikes and whatever you want, in other words it is not safe for those who want to enjoy nature in peace. If you want to swim and enjoy the beach, don't go to Maranhão. I believe that the trip that goes along the Preguiça River to Atins by speedboat is more recommended than the one to Caburé.
Getting to the Folhas National Park is very tumultuous. We have to go on ferries to access the side that takes the sand road. You have to walk there and back on a macaw stick, which shakes all the time until you reach a staircase equivalent to 8 floors and there you will see the beauty of the sheets. A beautiful place with lagoons. For me, Lagoa Bonita is worth bathing in. She is really very beautiful. The sunset is really wonderful. Children and elderly people don't even think about going, in my opinion, it's complicated.
