It is the most important religious building in the city. The cathedral was built in 1940 after the pull down of the original one in Parque Vidal in 1923. Neo Gothic in style, it guards a wonderful collection of lead stained glass windows, the original marble “pilon” or holy water basin used to baptize the citizens since the very birth of the city, the statue of Jesus in the upper front holds a monstrance which is said is made out of pure gold. But the most impressive piece of art is the larger than life statue of the Virgin Mary inside the structure locally known as “la Virgen del camino”. This statue used to be, at the beginning of the Cuban Revolution, on the road to Havana as a way to bless the incoming or outgoing travelers to the city. It was pulled down soon after and it disappeared for more than three decades. It was finally re-discovered around 1995 in a ditch, roofed by soil and undergrowth. Already forgotten by the citizens of Santa Clara, a political battle ensued to decide whether taking it to a museum or giving it to the church. It was finally granted to the religious authorities.

On our visit back home we visited this simple but prayerful cathedral. It was simple, clean and traditional. I was impressed by the stain-glass windows and the statue of the Virgin Mary at the entrance.

Beautiful interior, I once observed a service there from the back and the music, although piped, was fantastic because of the excellent accoustics of the building.

Just a normal church, like many others in Cuba. The Neo-Gothic building is quite nice outside, but inside is rather underwhelming.

This little cathedral is about two blocks away from the main square of Parque Vidal. Neo-Gothic in style and built in the 1940s, it's worth a look if you're in the area although I particularly liked the 1950's mosaic tiled 'Firestone Tyres' advert built into the wall just to the right of the cathedral...!!

Big Neo-Gothic cathedral which can't rival all the magnificent Colonial Baroque churches to be found in most Cuban cities...

This cathedral is the most important in Santa Clara and is very nice to look at. It's not surrounded by a square, like tradition dictates, but actually just on a normal looking road. Nice for a quick stop, but nothing to go out of your way to see.

This is typical church from the Colonial times, is a must see place in the city. Good conserved architecture, they have the Misa on Sundays and you go inside free of charge.
