This is a completely stunning and wonderful hike. It is not just an easy ride so be prepared to some hardship but you will be rewarded with some utterly amazing scenery. And goats. Plan a whole day for this and enjoy the tranquil village of Cain at the other end and have your lunch in one of the restaurants there before heading back.

More strenuous than I thought

I recently completed this route from Poncebos to Cain, having previously done it from Posada de Valdeon to Cain (access to Valdeon by car is hair raising so most people start from Poncebos). The first hour is up hill and uneven and would be difficult without proper walking shoes/boots. After that, it's easy walking and the scenery is dramatic with the river rushing far below you; part of it is boardwalk clinging to the side of the gorge face. Of course, this is Spain and the lack of barriers means you are expected to use your sense and not throw yourself off the edge - still, some people may not like being so close to an unprotected drop of a couple of hundred metres! It took us 3 hours to walk to Cain with stops for photos, etc/2 and a bit hours back. There are a few bars there to have lunch, etc at Cain; at the Poncebos end there are two restaurant/bars.

Breathtaking.

We are avid hikers and this is possibly the most spectacular trail we have done in our life. Carved along the wall of the canyon, the views just cannot be described. Long but technically easy, it is an absolute must. Add this to your bucket list.

Great trip off season
Aug 2017
Strongly recommend the trip to Cares to hike the 20km route (return). It is very easy to walk and beautiful no see. Need to visit early in the morning to escape the heat and crowd. Best to visit in september or june (off season).

Beautiful walk

The path from Poncebo to Cain is 12 km.
The first 2 km is going up. After that straight ahead with the most amazing views.
The path is easy to walk if you are in reasenable condition.
We went half the way and back to poncebos in 3 hours.
The path is crowded but beside this fact is is mostly recommendeble.
Parking possible in Poncebos. Also bars and cafes here.

Walked from Cain to Poncebos in the \Cares gorge
Jun 2017
A good day out but be warned there is considerable exposure. the path is 4/ 5 feet wide but is uneven and polished in places and for long stretches there are sheer drops hundreds of feet down into the gorge so if you do not have a head for heights do NOT go. Otherwise if this is not a problem you will be fine and enjoy a good day. IMO this walk is not a patch on the Verdon Gorge in France, which I recommend on a sunny Autumn day when the colours are fantastic. On our recent walking trip here this was not my favourite walk. I preferred the route from Poncebos up tp Bulnes but again that is very exposed in places and very polished and by far the bst walk IMO is from top of Fuente De cable car up Hdos Rojos but again a serious outing of at least 5 -6 hours with a relentless 3 hours of ascent for 2,300 feet over very rough ground.

A challenging but very popular walk through stunning and varied scenery but not for anyone with Vertigo. Not to be missed if you are in this area, but avoid misty or wet conditions. If starting from the funicular railway end, make sure you don't miss the turn on the right which takes you high above the river before dropping down to the canal.

Incredible experience
May 2017
Beautiful hike following the river gorge, really incredible from the high cliff walls to the different vistas around every turn. I started my hike in Pocebos at 1100 and got to Cain in time for lunch. A few restaurants all serving 12 euro daily menus which is great considering it being a tourist area. I then started the trip back (I didn't choose to take a taxi or shuttle as I saw it was almost 1.5-2 hours ride and I preferred to enjoy the return. I will say it was a long round trip as there are some rocks to walk and some meters altitude to navigate. Also, if you have vertigo issues, may not be the best activity for you.
