    Picturesque Catholic Abbey in Germany
During our Europe Tour in Germany Gate 1 made short stop at this lovely church in the Bavarian mountains. It’s a retreat established by catholic monks and nuns very old. They established a beautiful place to worship and do work for the community and support their ministry. We only stopped for a brief visit but you can certainly get a glimpse of their beautiful church there. Stop by the gift shop for samples of their special beer and liquor. Lots of beautiful religious artifacts.

    Impressive site
We stopped here for a very quick visit on our drive from Fussen back to Munich. It was late in the afternoon, so the Abbey was already closed. However, we were able to walk into the main courtyard and view it from the outside, which was itself very impressive. It’s a quaint little town, and we would have liked to spend more time.

Incredible architecture in such a remote place
Incredible architecture in such a remote place. The Abbey is about a 15 minute drive from Garmisch in a very small village. The building itself is huge and the church although small compared to many others is utterly spectacular and an incredible example of architecture and religious interior. Sit quietly inside and be mesmerised by its glorious appeal.

This is a large Benedictine facility. The church itself has large paintings in it, statues, and a tremendous amount of gold gilded items which really makes the indoor shine. The interior of the church is not real big, but sure elaborate. They have guides to take you inside and tell about the church. They also have school buildings and currently are housing about 60 Ukranian refuges. The monks are getting older and getting replacements is difficult. They make and sell beer and liquors.

A beautiful old abbey, about an hour outside of Munich. The church has a beautiful ceiling and with the dome, lets in plenty of sun, to make it seem very light and airy. A nice gift shop on the premises. We probably spent just over 30 minutes and combined the stop at the Abbey with a visit to Linderhof Palace which was a short drive away.

We strolled the grounds and went into, and looked around, the Church. The grounds are very nice and well maintained.

The Church is beautiful from the outside. The interior is, well, ornate in the style of the 1700s. A little too gaudy for me, but the result is the product of hundreds of artisans and painters. In that sense, it was a job well done.

Stopped by while driving back to Munich for a visit as I had heard about the abbey through their beer. The church itself is pretty nice with a large dome. Inside is also beautiful as well. While visiting, recommend a visit to the brewery which is on the backside and sample the beer options, you will not regret it if you like Bavarian beer.

You won't risk missing it because its imposing dome rises above the roofs of the city and can be seen from afar. Parking 2€ minimum. Free admission. The church is located entirely under the dome and is round. Rococo style so full of gilding, stucco... Worth a stop.

The monastery in Ettal is beautiful and always worth a visit. Entry is free, which I think is wonderful. It looks impressive from the outside, but wonderfully quiet and relaxing on the inside. Next to it is a large, well-stocked monastery shop. The monks of the monastery sell their products here and are happy to give advice. There are great gifts, books, food and drinks here. Many of the gifts, such as handmade wood carvings, are even consecrated.

Beautiful monastery complex, not only the monastery is worth visiting, but there are still all kinds of buildings, which unfortunately we did not have the time for ourselves. Very friendly monks in the shop; we stayed neat with the dog outside, but soon a monk came out saying that most four-legged people behave better than the two-legged ones 😉. Lots of choice also in the shop of books, souvenirs and local products. I highly recommend the Ettaler Beer.

Visited with a tour in August 2022. Nice location with an interesting story. After visiting the Church went back across the street to sample the beers brewed at the Abby. Enjoyed both that we tried.
