We visited as part of a greater Bavarian castle day trip and thought Linderhof was just as impressive as Neuschwanstein. Neuschwanstein has a beautiful exterior but at Linderhof it is 100% worth paying for the interior tour. It's quite mind blowing. In particular the kings bed! Very happy we included this on our itinerary.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 10, 2023
- regattagirlHooksett, New Hampshire114 contributionsDon't skip this!Even though we arrived in November when the gardens and fountain were tucked in for the winter, we had a wonderful tour of the Schloss itself. The guide was outstanding, and it was clear how much she loved being there. We also got to watch how the staff clean the rooms --- very interesting to see behind the scenes! You cannot go wrong visiting the Linderhof!Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 23, 2023
- osnoopy13Lilburn, Georgia443 contributionsLovely Palace near Munich on Our TourThis was the last great palace on our 11 day tour of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Quite a walk up to the entrance. Once inside you can not take pictures but loved the atmosphere and history. The king that built it never lived in it but the guide told us quite a lot about his life and family. The wall of Beauty displaying all the ladies who were considered as potential for the kings next queen was an interesting way to select a wife. Loved the king’s bedroom where he had 3 tiers of waiting areas for people who wanted audience with him. Outside the castle are beautiful gardens and fountains. Supposed to be modeled like Versailles in France. This is one place you don’t want to miss if in the area. However keep in mind there are a lot of stairs inside which may be difficult for some people with handicaps.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 21, 2024
- Charlotte TNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom208 contributionsFabulous palace and gardens - highly recommendExcellent value for money visiting gorgeous grounds and historic palace. We preferred this to the better known Neuschwanstein castle and associated second palace and museum ( although that is still very worthy of a visit). We booked on line for an English language tour and had that plus access to the beautiful gardens and multiple surrounding “kiosks” and hunting lodge. All for €10 each plus €3 for parking. The Neuschwanstein complex was €50 each plus €12 for parking. You hear the same interesting history of King Ludwig II in both places If you are on a budget the gardens alone are easily accessible for pushchairs/ wheelchair users for just the price of the parking. The fountain goes off every 30 mins and is lovely to see. Food outlets were limited on the day we visited ( a Saturday in June!) but there are several bars/ restaurants/ cafes in the nearby village of Ettal - where there is a spectacular baroque abbey to visit ( for free) We didn’t have time but walking and cycling opportunities along the valley from Ettal to the Schloss looked lovely. An area well worth visitingVisited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 8, 2024
- David BEl Barco de Avila, Spain660 contributionsGuided tour of a small baroque palaceWe visited Linderhof Palace on a day trip from Munich so our time at the palace was limited. This is a hunting lodge which Ludwig II converted to a baroque palace. It was raining hard when we visited so we did not explore the gardens. The palace is visited by timed guided tour, and you need to be at the entry point with your ticket to access the palace at your time. You are then taken round the palace by a guide who will explain (in English in our case) the details of the palace and point out the interesting features. The palace is relatively small, so the tour only lasts about 30 minutes, but you are not rushed round, and our group was of a size that allowed everyone to see the features pointed out comfortably.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 21, 2024
- 907blakedTampa, Florida1,456 contributionsProbably our most favorite palace to visit during our trip to BavariaOur group was surprised at how much we enjoyed our visit here. Parking was 3 euros (cash only, I think). No advance reservations needed for tickets; once you arrive at the ticket office next to the parking area, you will be assigned to the next tour (English speaking, if you want). It's about a 10-minute walk from the parking area/ticket office to the palace itself, and so they gave us a tour time that was about 20 minutes in the future, which was perfect. The tour lasted about 25 minutes and was very good. The palace is "small," and so the tour involves only 1 floor with about 9 rooms, but the decorations were fantastic, and the guide was very good. After the tour, we explored the grounds for about 40 minutes, and they were very luxurious (although not huge). (It is not possible to view the palace without a tour, but you can explore the grounds for free if you don't want to visit the palace.) There is a kiosk with drinks and food next to the parking area and ticket office. The grounds include beautiful flowers and landscaping, and there is a Moroccan house on the grounds that you can view for free that is pretty cool. We spent almost 2 hours here and really enjoyed it.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 9, 2024
- ERFSU82Wellington, Florida1,681 contributionsPalatial estate in a beautiful settingWe stopped for a quick visit on our drive from Fuson back to Munich. It was late in the afternoon, so the palace had already closed and we were unable to tour the inside. However, we were able to spend about 30 minutes, walking around the outside and exploring the grounds, which were very impressive. It is a very palatial estate. That looks very different than other castles in the area. From the parking lot, it’s an easy 5 to 10 minute walk to the palace. The setting is beautiful, and the grounds are meticulously covered with gardens, fountains and walkways. Definitely worth visiting.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 12, 2024
- MrsN23Dallas, Texas15 contributionsBeautiful gardens!Absolutely beautiful gardens surrounding Linderhof. With so many castles in Germany and Austria there is just simply too many to see. Not to mention, pricey if you're buying entrance into each one. For Linderhof, I recommend just paying for parking (if you drive) and walk around the garden and grounds, which is free. Save your money if you're on a budget to go inside Neuschwanstein, unless of course you're a history enthusiast. Linderhof is easy to stop over after a few fun hours at Oberammergau Alpine Coaster. Bring your good camera!Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 22, 2024

The guide was excellent answering any questions and pointing out lots of details on the decor. Couldn’t take any photos inside, but that seems to be the norm in Germany! Loved this place and would def go back.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 5, 2024

King Ludwig II had a serious penchant for spending his subjects money. During his short 40-year lifespan, he started the construction of three different castles (Neuschwanstein and Herrenchiemsee being the other two) but Linderhof was the only one that was actually finished during his lifetime. Ludwig was a weird dude with a strange fascination regarding King Louis XIV (AKA the sun king). So much so that everything in Linderhof is fashioned after (or bears a striking resemblance to) Versailles. The grounds are fairly normal for a castle but the interior is opulent. About $330,000 worth of gold leaf adorns much of the interior of the palace. Meissen pottery is ubiquitous, and lots of fancy artwork abounds on the walls of the property. Definitely worth the drive to get there. Know that tours are at specific times and we needed to wear a mask inside. Highly recommended

The hiking trails and grounds (especially the Hunding's Hut-- interior designed after a set in Wagner's Die Walkure "The Valkyrie") are really wonderful. The palace, based on Versaille, is small but opulent and unlike some palaces where all rooms start looking alike, these are each unique. The grotto behind the palace as well as the fountains in front were closed for a long maintenance period during my visit. I hope that you will get to see them on your visit and be able to spend enough time to enjoy it all.

King Ludwig sounds like he was a weird guy, and he built this weird little palace where he lived while he was having the huge Schloss Neuschwanstein built. The palace is pretty small but it's extremely opulent. The royal bedroom is so extravagant that it's just mind-blowing. King Ludwig was obsessed with the French monarchy so he tried to model a lot of the interior off Versailles. Also, weirdly, he had portraits of French royals and aristocrats hung everywhere instead of portraits of his own family. Kinda creepy.
We went on the English language tour which provided a ton of great information. I wouldn't have been able to put the place in context without the tour.
We got to the castle on a tour bus, which I would recommend, because the palace is out of the way and difficult to get to. It also requires some walking slightly uphill from the parking lot for about ten minutes or so.
The only reason I gave four stars instead of five is because major construction was going on in the gardens and on the exterior of the palace. It was very obstructive and loud. I couldn't take a good picture of the exterior because of this.

Linderhof Castle is a baroque castle near Oberammergau.
It is the smallest of the three castles commissioned by Louis II of Bavaria and the only one completed before his death. The castle is located at 948 meters above sea level. Linderhof was Louis II's favorite place to stay, which he invariably called "Mein Villa".
Linderhof Castle was once a royal country residence (Königshäuschen) of his father Maximilian II.
In 1867, after Louis II visited the Palace of Versailles, he made plans for a new country retreat and decided to convert the small house into a 'Royal Villa'.
The wooden original house was rebuilt about two hundred meters away.
Entrance of the gardens is free.

My husband and I made a 12 day trip to Bavaria in August, ‘23. As part of our trip, we spent 2 nights in Schwangau and dedicated one day as “castle day”.
We opted to tour Hochenschwangau in the morning, then made the hike up to Neuschwanstein (but without the tour of the interior of Neuschwanstein as I had already toured it twice before, there was notification that a couple of areas were closed for tour this summer and the interior of Neuschwanstein was never finished and the tour is fairly abbreviated anyway).
After the hike, we stopped at the Biergarten mid mountain for a late lunch and beer.
We then drove to Linderhof Palace as I had never been there. The drive took about 45 minutes from Neuschwanstein /Hochenschwangau and went past a lake busy with summer vacationers. Our tour of Linderhof was late in the afternoon. It was very warm inside the palace and because Linderhof is much smaller than the other castles, the tour was fairly short. No photos allowed in the palace, as is the case with the other castles. The design of the gardens surrounding the palace is pretty, but we thought the plantings themselves were lacking a bit.
If you are in the area of Linderhof Palace, it is certainly worth a visit, but I don’t think it’s worth the drive from the Neuschwanstein/ Hochenschwangau area. In retrospect, I would have rather spent the time exploring downtown Fussen.

The castle itself was beautiful, with thousands of little details on the walls and ceiling, and the Mirror room is absolutely stunning.
Sadly we could not see anything properly because we were rather rudely rushed from room to room with barely a minute stop.
The tour was advertised as 25 mins but ours was over in 15. We were a big and crowded group even though the time slots before and after us were almost empty.
The guide's English was not very good, she spoke quietly and fast so I did not understand much. The only thing I understood clearly was the "no photos" rule and threats repeated in every room that we will be kicked out if we try to make a photo.
So, the visit was kind of waste of money. Did not see much, couldn't hear anything, was not allowed to take a photo. I had much more pleasure watching videos of the castle online.

A beautiful property, well worth the trip. The house itself is very compact, it’s the smallest of King Ludwig II palaces & the mandatory guided tour takes just 25 minutes (German & English). Interior decor is extraordinary, an elaborate, madcap confection of marble, porcelain, frescoes, mirrors, chandeliers & gold leaf. King Ludwig admired & emulated the showy, lavish style of King Louis & dreamed of making Linderhof a Bavarian Versailles. Finances hampered his grandiose fantasy but what it lacks in size it makes up for in opulence. Ludwig lived here for around 8 years & it’s the only one of his residences to be finished. Heavy rain put us off spending too much time outside, but the gardens are also beautiful & there are other buildings of interest dotted around the grounds. It’s disappointing that photos aren’t permitted, but makes sense in such an intimate environment crammed with treasure.

Ignore the digger, the dumper truck and the scaffolding and look beyond.
All the small rooms are opulent in the extreme, more so as they all have wall mirrors which magnify them and make it seem as if there are much larger rooms beyond.
The amount of marble and gold leaf is mind blowing, all for a small palace for one man to live in.
The cascade which Ludwig would see from his bed each morning is under reconmstruction as are much of the grounds.
Still well worth it.

When will the garden renovation be complete? We are coming in late May.
Written April 16, 2019
No, it’s not worth to go there. You’ll see only a construction site. You have to wait at least 1hour to see the palace so, in the end, you’ll spend a couple of hours seeing nothing.
It was one my worst castle seeing experience.
