If you don’t have time to hike to the top, this is a good alternative. It saves time. We had a beautiful day so the views were breathtaking. Had lunch and observed the ruins as well as visited the museum. Museum was very thorough and was very informative. Highly recommend.

Came early morning to avoid the heat and took the 9h20 train. 15 minutes after we were at the top. You can take several walks, the longest goes all around the Puy with incredible views. We had lunch at the bistronomique, a little hot in there but food was ok. All in all we stayed a good 4 hours at the top, this is beautiful !

Some of us could have walked to the top but one of us would have really struggled. This way there was very little effort and who doesn't like a slow train ride up the side of a volcano?
Once at the top the view is breath taking. You can wander around and see mad people launching off the side of the volcano with nothing more than a rucksack, some strings and a bit of silk to keep them safe. You can see and wonder at the temple of Mars and then just walk around and enjoy the view and the statue of an aviator.
I would love to walk one way and train the other way at some point but this was so pleasant I might not bother.

This is a beautiful natural area with lovely hike up to the summit of a volcano where a weather station is. So much history ... this is where Pascal proved the concept of atmospheric pressure (in the 1,600's). There's the ruins of a Temple to the god Mercury who was the god of trade, travelers and medicine.
For non-hikers there is a train to the summit. great views of the surrounding volcanoes

Puy de domes is worth visiting by train. We walked down. Views superb. Paragliding at top (book in advance). We walked down (2hrs) and steep. Historical centre at top and toilets and restaurants. You can get train back down. Car park free.

Unless you're a keen and fit walker the train is the only option to reach the top. The journey is in a modern and comfortable train with fabulous views - sit on the left side for the best views on the way up, and the right on the way down.
Lots to see at the top, fabulous views, Roman temple and exhibition, paragliders, food and drink and toilets.
A great way to spend half of a day, and good value considering what is on offer.

For sure this direct train is the fastest way to the summit of the Puy de dome. The seats are not always enough depending on the season but regarding that my visit was on April which was not a pick season, some people had to stand up during the trip. Also, it's better to have a seat on the right side on the uphil and left side on the down hill to observe the magnific view.

We went to Puy-de-Dome on August, the highest season. There is always a queue of people waiting to be boarded. We hiked up and took the train down. The train ride is very comfortable, but the ticket is not cheap. Here is the website: http://www.panoramiquedesdomes.fr/en/page/tarifs.

It was a quiet day when we visited so did not have to queue for the train. Huge and clearly very expensive barn like building which I imagine it would be pretty loud and busy in the height of summer. The train itself was great, quiet and comfortable and cleverly built into the side of the Puy to reduce environmental impact. Again massive building at the summit but well designed as you cannot see these from the bottom at all. Very good museum/ explanatory boards about the geology/ geomorphology of the Puys, the history of the Puy Du Dome and especially of the Temple of Mercury Roman remains at the summit. Lots of carefully way marked walks and an explanation of the Chaine Du Puys walking routes. Cafe good with lots of space to eat in or out although I imagine it would get very crowded on a busy day, it was busy enough when we were there or a quiet day. Usual French Cafe food at a reasonable price. Souvenir shops both at the summit and the base could be improved though eg, why are they selling minerals from places like Mexico and all the usual plastic animals and other tat. Saw very few people actually buy anything except postcards. Still a brilliant view from the top - a must do on any visit to Clermont - Ferrand and the Auvergne
