Resting place and art museum in the open
Nov 2018 • Couples
The largest cemetary area in Stockholm, "Norra begravningsplatsen" (North Cemetary) is a vast area with different topographics; plain ground, hills, forest... Many of Sweden's most famous people of all kinds are buried here. And many graves are adored by important pieces of art and the whole area is a kind of open air museum.
Most famous is the grave of August Strindberg (1849-1912), Sweden's most important and internationally known writer. His grave is a simple wooden cross with the Latin inscription "Ave Crux, spes unica" (Hail Cross, our only hope).
Take a moment in this tranquil environment, just a stone throw from the bustling inner city.

Never thought I would write something about a burial ground but we ended up walking here for a couple of hours and were flabbergasted by what we discovered from the old days and now. Historical and architectural and breathtaking

A large cemetery where many famous people were buried, eg Alfred Nobel. Beautiful areas with trees, hills and rocks.

Tranquility

This beuautiful cemetery (Norra begravningsplatsen in Swedish) spans many meticulously tended green acres. It's air of peace makes for a lovely walk on sunny days. We took a bus to the Karolinska Institute and then walked from there. Ingrid Bergman's understated grave in the Bergman family plot was a highlight.

Vast beautiful parklike graveyard

Close to Hagaparken and old Solna Church you find this nice burial site, perfect for a one hour walk any season of the year. We came in summer and our rather fuzzy children found it interesting to see the different styles and human fates displayed on the stones. For us Swedes there are plenty of well known names from our national history to be found. We stumbled across August Strindberg, Hazelius, J O Wallin, Lars Hierta and orhers.
