We were told that Sumtsaling Monastery were very similar to Potala Palace, but you would be disappointed if you have that thinking as it is much smaller scale. However, you must visit this place if you are in Shangri-La. There are many different temples all represent different things and you can go to visit all of them. If you go... More

Impressive Tibetan Monastery with shimmering golden roof . You have to be fit to visit this temple. There are lots of steps. We had to stop and rest several times before reaching the top. But it is worth the climb. The view at the summit is great, The Monastery and temples are interesting too, We went in the afternoon and... More

The Sumtsaling Monastery is a stunning looking structure that is located on a hill-side near Shangri-La China. The view from below the hill looking up at the whole monastery complex is quite impressive. This monastery one of my favorites next to the Potala Palace in Lhasa Tibet. On a sunny day, the gold embellishments that adorn the roof areas just... More

A beautiful golden guided monastery and temple! Best visited on a clear day with a perfect Yunan blue sky, the golden roofs just glitter in the sunlight. It's easily accessible by bus and wasn't at all crowded, at times we felt we had the place to ourselves. It was an excellent experience wandering through the many temples, observing the monks... Visited this monastery on a gorgeous clear day which made it all the more picturesque. Stairs, lots of stairs, ... Come with good walking shoes. Please be aware that the rule is to walk in a clockwise rotation. By not following this rule you are disrespecting the monks. Also, no photography is allowed inside the religious halls. Another cultural point... More

Lovely Tibetan Monastery. I haven't been to Tibet before, so this is probably the closet I can get to seeing the actual Potala in Lhasa. Worth a visit. Don't miss the "best photographic angle" spot in front of the entrance to the monastery, it makes a nice selfie. ;) There are also free guided tours in Chinese. Check with the... More

Not a Buddhist so probably it didn't overwhelm me so much. Well built and the gold glistened in the sun. Had a whole village surrounding it.

Fortunately for us we had a Guide to explain the significance of the buildings, paintings and images. Whether looking at the monastery from outside or at the surrounding mountains from inside the visitor will find experience uplifting

The walk around the small lake at the base of the Monastery complex provides lovely views of the buildings prior to going into explore this amazing complex. The views from the top of the temple was also great.

Sparkling in the sunshine, this alone is worth the 4.5 hour drive from Lijiang. The monastery and nearby lake are breaktaking. We came here 4 years ago, while restoration was still in progress, and were blown away by it then. Now it is complete it is just stunning. Note that it is possible to go up on to the roof... More
