My Hubby and I intend to visit Napa Lake but end up we travel a stone throw away to Shi Ka Snow Mountain. At Napa Lake nothing to see just grassland and paid to ride horse. We make the right decision to go to Shi Ka Snow Mountain. The cable car got 2 stop. You have the option to take cable car to station 1 or both. The 1st station RMB100 took us to a beautiful grassland with flower and a tourist shop which sell local herbs and eco car RMB90 to a lake.
The 2nd station RMB120 took us to the top where we can view whole town of Shangrila and all around us Snow Mountains. The view was spectacular and worth the trip here. There were rental of jacket and oxygen. Be prepare because it can be cold here because it's 4500M.
There's not many tourist except their local people. I wonder why there's not much info about this place. This place was so much better than Napa Lake as its too commercial.

It is a Nature park beside the Shangri-la county, a well known freshwater lake. In summer the water melting from surrounding mountains flows in and forms a vast lake, in dry season, the water recede and grassland appears--the best time for herding sheep or cattle. September is paradise of migratory birds like bar-headed geese, wild ducks, and cranes.

This lake is only about 30 minutes drive from Shangri-La town, surrounded by the above grasslands, and in a basin surrounded by mountains. In the summer this area is used for grazing by Yaks, pigs, horses, and for farmers to hang their barley and turnips to dry. But as the rains come the lake swells and when we were there much of the grasslands, many of the drying trestles and the ground floor of some farms were already under water.

I went there this morning, the only yak I saw was tied to a rope with a saddle on his back to take pictures. I have already done Mongolia and the autonomous territory of Tibet. This pond has nothing to do with the plains of this country. A money factory and it's not a lake. A few horses were free on the other hand we were harassed for riding

During the dry season, the water recedes from Napa Lake and grasslands appear. Migratory birds flock here during the winter months. The rare black-necked crane spends its winter here. This grasslands become a grazing ground for yaks, horses, cows and sheep for the surrounding farms. There are also horses for hire here during the dry autumn and winter months as this area becomes a grassland instead of a wetland then. Local farmers offer their horses for hire at a nominal fee.

If you ever get the chance to travel to this area of China take it. I was with a group looking at the flora of the region, the diversity and richness set in a stunning landscape was breathtaking. So many delights to be discovered - just along the roadside we found allium, delphinium, geranium and orchids to name but a few. The grasslands are a vast open plain, studded with yak and horses all held within a bowl of mountains often tipped with torn apart cloud. Being there is like being in a huge living geography book. I'm still reeling form the experience.

Napa Lake in winter was full of different bird species—some endangered. My kids loved the snow and wildlife, and the scenery was spectacular. Well worth the time!

Having spent several hours driving around the grasslands and lake area, I am so happy that we came. Stopping to get up close to yak and cows was fantastic! The scenery was spectacular . . . horses grazing against the backdrop of mountains. Although I did not eat anything, there were even small tents set up with vendors selling food for visitors.

The owner of the guesthouse we stayed in offered us a late afternoon short drive to this place at a very reasonable cost and we were very glad we took it (it was back in July 2014). The weather and timing was just perfect that we got to enjoy an incredible view. Cloud reflections on the lake's still water. Vast green meadows with some Tibetan herders taking home their herds. Guided horse riding - which we did not take. Great photo opportunities.
