An oasis of calm, and every time different light and colors; despite the holiday period, very quiet! the tour groups (red and blue jackets) stayed at the monastery... ; better walk here clockwise; interesting was the sky-burial place.
I've been here three times during my visit, every day different. Strange is it that you have to buy an entrance ticket every time for the monastery, even if you just prefer to walk here (an entrance ticket is valid for one day).

One of the lakes in Pudacuo National Park (the first national park in China). I was there mid of October 2012, and the views are fabulous!! Blue skies, white clouds, great sunshine and beautiful autumn colors.

There are eco-buses to take you around the park, and the first stop in the park is Shuodu Lake. You can opt to walk around the lake on a wooden walkway (easy and won't get lost), total distance is 3.3km with lots of photo taking opportunities or continue to the next stop via eco-bus but you will miss lots of scenery. I have spent about 2 hours plus to finish the walk because I stop a lot for photos taking otherwise I think the walk can be done in 1 to 2 hours. I practically have the place by myself when I was there. Didn't encounter tour groups, occasionally bump into individual travelers, having said that all walk at different pace so no issue of crowdness.

Will post some pictures here when I have time.

Amazing venue with spectacular nature and gorgeous view. Do remember to go early and stroll slowly in the oxygen-thin air. For smokers, be reminded of hefty fine if lighter is still found on you after the initial waiting point at the bus depot.
Drone pilots will be happy, drones are allowed here.. enjoy.

We do not regret having gone there, but... The National Park is nice and the lakes beautiful even though there are more spectacular places on this world. It is visited by thousands of people every day - meaning the park management has introduced very strict rules. The entry procedure is very poorly designed: First you enter the premises (we came with a hotel car), sbd writes a number of a piece of paper. Then you buy the tickets (do not be fooled by very short queue and the English-language capability of the sales clerk). After this you enter a large room and are surrounded by hundreds of other tourists. In the middle of the room a few young men in uniform, military appearance and not very friendly: They shouted numbers in Chinese. As their pronunciation was not very clear and the room really noisy, everybody was trying to push closer. Our impression was that some clever Chinese people tried to negotiate with the men - we do not know whether they were successful. The atmosphere was slightly aggressive because nobody knew what was going on and many had the notion that he/she were the last to get on the shuttle bus. After 40 min (!) our number was called and we were seated in a shuttle bus that brought us to the first lake. We were allowed to walk on wooden trails only - whenever you leave the trail a person with a megaphone will address you. You walk surrounded by dozens of people. For the average tourist used to the freedom US-American or Australian National Parks provide shocking. But you are in China, and I think the park management does a decent job to protect the environment while allowing the visitors to see some very nice lakes. And the connection of shuttle buses and flat trails allow also older visitors or people with physical impairments to enjoy the beautiful landscape. We would recommend to improve the entry procedure however and to get rid of the megaphones.

Unlike hiking Tiger Leaping Gorge, this area had vehicle access and so there were a reasonable number of Chinese tourists. However it was not over crowded and it was a pleasant day's outing.

Big and Beautiful lake for horse riding and costume pictures. It is very windy and glaring weather. The horses are well-trained by the owners. The only disadvantage is the rides were less than 45 mins instead of the time given at one and a half hour.

We took the bicycle there, it's a 4-5 hours trip with bicycle, problem is most bicycles aren't in superb condition (although they look new), which as a bike rider always gets me a little down (and later hurts my back). Careful.with the weather. The maps and directions they give you are worth ****, so If you really want to find it make sure you use Google maps or something.
Don't think I would have got there on a bus because it's just not that impressive, but with the bicycle experience it was nice...
On the way back we changed course to the inner part of the lake (the shore that is closer to the city) and on a cement track passed in a few truely authentic villages which were pretty awesome and for me - saved the day.

Shad lake is part of the Parallel Rivers from UNESCO as well it holds AAAAA classification from Chinese Government, so you can expect a very good maintenance and infra-structure.
the price is around RMB 150 what is very expensive for Chinese Standards.
the park is 30 min driving out of Shangri-la and after arriving to the sight you will then start the bus tour, the first stop is shudu lake where you will be able to walk around 3km for the next bus stop.
the second stop is a photo stop on the plato, mainly to see Yaks and Horses around.
the third stop is BiDa lake, where you can chose between walking 4km or take a boat to cross the lake, i would suggest you to walk if you can.
To me the majority of the animals and close looks i got was in the Shudu lake.
suggestion to carry some spare oxygen as many people will need during the long walks.
it takes easy 4 to 5 hours to cross the National Park.

This is one of the lakes in Pudacuo National Park in SHangri-La county of China's Yunan Province. The waters are crystal clear, the guides friendly and can speak in English (though they could do with some improvement) and the wooden walkway around the lake makes ambling along while taking in the sights a pleasure. Like all tourist attractions in China, this is also extremely well maintained. The national park itself is a fascinating place to visit
