Not totally destroyed and lost by the eruption of Vesuvius. Preserved in the volcanic muds that enveloped the city.

This part of Herculaneum is the Terrace of Marcus Nonius Balbus, named in honour of the eponymous Roman senator who was a supporter of the future Augustus, Octavian. The terrace is a viewpoint of the town below and is lined with sculptures, including at least one of the senator. It’s a good viewpoint and one where you can get a panoramic of the town.

The same as Parco Acheologico di Ercolano. Look it up, there are a lot of reviews under that name. A must visit if you have time.

Herculaneum
Visiting Herculaneum from Sorrento is easy to do yourself. Catch a train from Sorrento to Ercolano. Cheap - a few euros each way. Return tickets available. Frequent train service. Ensure you get off in Ercolano Scavi - travelling from Sorrento, there is another Ercolano station immediately before Ercolano. Exit the station and follow the road to the right. Follow the Main Street downhill to the gates of Herculaneum...about 500 metres. This historic site is fascinating. One note of CAUTION ...on the road from the station is the Ristorante Pizzeria Vesuvio....it’s the one on the corner of the road junction (roundabout). You may see young (or not so young) girls waving menus and doing silly dances to get you to eat there. Avoid this pizzeria at all costs ...it’s a rip-off and hygiene standards are poor.

Good view point and there is a small (very small) museum with a Roman boat in it - do not miss this on your visit. You can get some good photos from here and see the skeletal remains in the dock enclosures quite clearly.

The terrace is an interesting viewpoint over Herculaneum. Providing an excellent view over the top of the city with Vesuvius in the background and seeing the previous shoreline is certainly interesting and something that cannot be appreciated with pictures.

The main photo here of La Terrazza di M. Nonio Balbo shows the most interesting and informative view of the Ercolano archeological site and old seafront. Ercolano is a much easier visit and more compact than Pompeii and we were so glad we used a private guide for our visit. We also found the guide's information about how the eruption of Vesuvius was experienced differently at Ercolano versus Pompeii. Immensely interesting and a very worthwhile visit.

We headed to this area towards the end of our guided tour. And while it's not as visually impressive as the buildings, it certainly helps one imagine the scene with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Our guide told us that the skeletons by the seafront were reproductions and not original.

An amazing walk in the past. Sad to read how they had died but proof how advanced they were. Try to go early morning 8:30 when it's quite with a possibility of getting a museum parking.
