We headed to this area towards the end of our guided tour. And while it's not as visually impressive as the buildings, it certainly helps one imagine the scene with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Our guide told us that the skeletons by the seafront...More

An amazing walk in the past. Sad to read how they had died but proof how advanced they were. Try to go early morning 8:30 when it's quite with a possibility of getting a museum parking.

From here you get an amazing view, it sets the tone of the place and gives you a real feel of what it must have been like in its heyday. Definitely a must do.

Taki g the audio tour you stop in this area first and it is the perfect introduction. Many people took the likely entrance but down the ramp and through the beach area is the best way to start your tour.

When the Ash deposited all over the city the whole area was covered to a depth of about 15-30 metres. The view point in this picture is taken from onto of the Ash looking down into the excavations.. and this would have been the old...More

You are bound to see this as you descend from the main part of the town to the dockside and you get a good idea of how the local big man M.Nonius Balbus managed to get the respect he felt he deserved. There are a...More

The terrace of Marcus Nonio Balbo celebrates a local boy who did well. It is situated on what was in 79AD the seafront of Herculaneum and is just a few metres from the boat sheds that contain the skeletons of some of those who died...More
