The Casa del Bel Cortile is one of the best preserved houses in Herculaneum and named for the well Bel Cortile or in English, beautiful courtyard. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s beautiful, but the courtyard and house are certainly well preserved. So well preserved that the interiors and structure of the rooms are largely intact. Large sections of red fresco are preserved on the walls, but it's not really that interesting as it’s mostly plain or simple geometric patterns. In contrast, the marble (I thinking( floor is also beautifully preserved in the inner courtyard.

I can't do justice to this particular site at Herculaneum, particularly compared to some of the detailed reviews I have seen for Casa del Bel Corti.
What I can say is that this is another example of the variety of architectural styles found in Herculaneum, and one that still has original components of the structure still intact. It's clear that the entire site has restricted access for the delicate nature of what remains, but is still clear how elaborate this particular residence was.
Another reason to put Herculaneum as a site to visit if one is interested in ancient Roman architecture for the great variety of examples found there.

One of the houses in Herculaneum that we had wanted to visit, but sadly was closed the day that we were there. Fortunately, nowhere near so many places are closed on a daily (or yearly) basis as at Pompeii.

Within the ruins of Herculaneum there is a house, Casa del Bel Cortile which has many rooms including a central interior courtyard, stairwell, 4 upper rooms, kitchen and large rectangular room,
There are figures painted on white areas and red geometric patterns with red areas including the courtyard. The 4 upper rooms are decorated in frescoe style - painting done quickly in water colour on wet plaster on walls or ceilings, the colour penetrates the plaster and become fixed as it dries out.
The rectangular room has a mosaic floor and decorated in reds and yellows, here there is a display case containing three skeletons, apparently a mother, father and young child huddled together in the last terrifying moments of their lives.

Much of the house survives intact including mosaics and is typical of the state of preservation of the buildings at Herculaneum. This is one of the surviving ones with an upper storey and also a beautiful inner courtyard

Access to most parts of the House of the Beautiful Courtyard is severely restricted. You can't even get to the courtyard let alone the second floor. It should be an excellent site according to descriptions and pictures on the internet.

There isn' a building to be missed in Herculaneum. This more than one room to explore with some good mosaics.
