La casa dello Scheletro or the House of Skeletons is probably the first interesting house I saw after entering the site. It’s so named for the skeletal remains found in the house (which have since been moved). Despite the lack of skeletons, it’s worth wandering into the house as two of the rooms have niches decorated with frescoes, especially the blue coloured frescoes in the nymphaeum.

So called because a skeleton was found in the house in 1831 (now long since gone). There are several beautiful frescoes and mosaics in this house, particularly in the nymphaeum, and some original ironwork in the roof.

The household shrine, mosaics and frescoes make this house at Ercolano very interesting. Wonderful to be able to see it.

We stopped here with a guided tour. It was not the most impressive villa, but I certainly appreciated it.

well done mosaic work, even though the skeletons are no longer here, the art is remarkably well preserved

So on our arrival into the historic grounds of Herculaneum we were quickly met with the house of the skeleton on the right hand side.

Upon approaching the doorway immediately a mosaic floor was in front of us leading in, amazing considering this was placed before 79AD.

The house combines 3 homes with a stunning nymphaeum that has been so well preserved. The house itself was named after a skeleton was discovered on the upper floor in 1830-31. It is a very interesting and breathtaking start to exploring such interesting ruins!

A very emotional place when you think of how they died all those years ago, but at the same time fascinating.
Worth a look.

Just one of many fascinating houses in the partially excavated city of Herculanium. Most of the city is still buried under the modern town.

Not that much to see here, but the house altar in paint and mozaic is stunning. It is under restauration and take a long period to finish in its former glory.
