This lake is gateway to Torres Del Paine National Park when approaching from Puerto Natales. It is an awesome lake not to be missed when visiting the park. Spotted several guanacos around this lake.

This makes for a good and easy leg stretcher walk. If the sun is right, you can get good pictures of snow-covered mountains reflected in the lake.

This lake presents a wonderful opportunity for a not-too-difficult hike, and for observing geological rock formations and calcium deposits. The banks/shorelines are white from the calcium deposits. Lake Sarmiento is located at the South Entrance to the park, the least used entrance. It has a lovely vantage point on a clear day.

We stayed at Tierra Patagonia, which is located close to the shore of the lake and from our room we had the chance to see the lake and Torres del Paine in the background, at sunrise, at sundown and during the day - it is an amazing view, not to be missed if you have the chance...

We had been up since 6 am to prepare for our bus journey from El Calafate across the Patagonian Steppes with all the awkward time-wasting of having to pass the borders of 2 countries that probably hate each other more than most on earth. The journey was dull, the weather miserable, but as we approached the National Park, the rain diminished and patches of blue started to appear. Our 1st stop to catch a distant view of the Paine Massif (Cordillera) was at a view point close to this rather large lake. As we wrapped ourselves, collected the camera, and descended from the bus, that segment of the sky immediately above our heads turned blue, the sun burst through, and the drizzle miraculously ceased. It was an unforgettable moment. The lake was much more densely blue than the sky. I was told that this was because unlike most of the other lakes that feed into the Paine or Serrano Rivers, after which they are carried through the Seno Ultima Speranza fjord to the Pacific Ocean, Sarmiento is a closed lake. Another possible explanation is that it is especially rich in the rock flour and microbial life occurring in most lakes within the park. Finally, it is notable for the thick rim of carbonate that provides its uppermost level and lips with a white chalky surface, arising partly from thermal activity and partly from natural evaporation. Although we did not attempt them, I have seen splendid videos showing the trails that run round the lake at a higher altitude, offering remarkable views as well as intensely windy conditions.

Like most of the lakes in Torres Del Paine, the views are spectacular whether the expanse, the mountains, the sky and clouds! Of course the weather can have a huge impact on your experience. Each of the lakes as well have a different story as far as origin, content, life, and impact on the area.

As with the other lakes in Torres del Paine, this one has beautiful clear blue water. It is most notable for the deposits of calcium carbonate around the rim, lending it an unusual white rim which looks like a sandy beach from a distance. You can take a long hike, partly on unmarked trails (covered by remains of the fire of a few years ago) or you can take a short walk from the trailhead at the other end. I believe the trail is called Lacal-Sarmiento, but I am not sure of the spelling of the first of these names. It is worth seeing this lake and it is easy and quick to do from the trailhead.

We drove by on our way departing from the park and stopped for photos. The mountain was the backdrop. The reflection of the mountain creates a scenic photo shoot. There is a shelter along the lake, a great location to have a picnic.
