We visited in March 2024: autumn is a great time for a visit as the intense Patagonian winds are gone and the climate is cooler. Long hike, ascending most of the time, but nothing technically challenging or too steep, and no exposure (I'm petrified of heights and had zero fears on this hike). Really easy to do yourself. Pack light, but with enough water (at least 2L per person), because its a long journey and the descent back can feel endless at times. When you reach the base of the towers, wait around for the sun to appear if its shrouded in clouds. 1-2 mins makes all the difference up in the mountains: the sun comes out of nowhere and you'll be rewarded with the picture perfect view!

Tough hike but worth it It's about a 20km round trip. You can get held up giving way to people going the other way. Go early as they start stopping people from proceeding to the top after around 3pm and close the top at 4pm. It took us around 4 hours to get to the top, the last few kms are just a scramble over rocks

It was an amazing, but challenging hike. Although I was muttering obscenities under my breath during parts of it, it was worth every step when we got to the lagoon. Perfect day, looked exactly like the pictures online restoring some faith in social media that not everything was just filters! We went with guides which was good since my crew did move at a slightly different pace depending on where we were. It was good weather, I had boots on, but hiking shoes would have been fine that day, for me anyway. I was thankful for the poles on way down the rock scramble. Layers were key and I brought some electrolytes

The ultimate goal and reward after the hike is the magnificent view itself. Your experience may depend on weather. We were lucky. We got very good visibility even though just for a few minutes. The weather was changing and the clouds came. No matter what weather, it will be interesting experience .

Be sure to train before undertaking this trip—to the Base de las Torres and especially when doing the W, not to mention the O Circuits. However, it’s NOT the hardest hike in the park, as some reviewers claim. They apparently didn’t do the O Circuit with its brutal ascent to Gardner Pass and even more bone-crushing descent to Camp Gray (took me 10 exhausting hours, with the most gorgeous views of my life.) Also, ascending to Mirador Frances and further up to Britanico is at least as tough as hiking to the Torres. It’s not a walk in the park. Do your homework and listen to the locals.
For the Torres, of course you need to be in shape, especially for the sections just below the lake, where you must climb large boulders on a steep incline. Going down may be even harder for those of us with busted knees. But the views are stunning, even in light rain. Go very early in the morning to avoid the damn crowds. Fortunately I set off from Camp Central at 5 am, and by 10 am I was roughly on the last third of the way back to Central, with droves of loud people clogging the trail. As is often the case, they disrespected the rules and trampled all over the landscape “because it was easier,” as one woman told me when I called her out to stay on the rocky trail.
I enjoyed the light drizzle, some fog on the lake, and a beautiful rainbow. The people who went later did get to see the Torres in the sunshine, but I’m happy I had the woods to myself at the crack of dawn. People who stay at Camp Chileno have a definite advantage. The Mirador is only 1 1/2 hours away for them. But keep in mind that if you’re hiking from Frances the previous day, it’s a long day and the trail to Chileno is windy, steep, and slippery in places. Not fun with a heavy backpack. So I stayed in Central and hiked light, even though it’s a longer stretch, about 7 hours total at my age (59).

Trail with medium to high difficulty, depending on your physical preparation it may be more difficult. It starts at the welcome center near the Las Torres hotel. It's 22km round trip, we did it in a net time of 8h. Allow 10 hours, counting the stops and the time you will spend up there. The beginning is a constant climb and then a descent to the Chilean Refuge. From there, woods with a slight climb and a final stretch with a steep climb between rocks. In this part we saw falling snow (February/2024). Arriving at the top, the weather is closed. You have to wait, the weather changes every minute. And that happened, clouds opened and the towers appeared. Incredible scenery. Mandatory trail.

We arrived at the Torres Hotel at 7am. We are fast hikers and wanted to push it on the way there. There are 3 basic sections if you start at the lot, each takes about the same amount of time.

Part 1 is from the lot to Chileno Refugio. Flat to start and then steady ascent over a good trail. You reach an apex then descend down to the river before entering the refugio. Clean water, restrooms there as well as store and restaurant. Took us 45 minutes to get there and we used the bathroom and filled up water and off we went.

Part 2 is the easiest stretch, rolling good trail mostly through the forest. Don’t go too hard here as the next part is most difficult so conserve a little energy. Time for us 45 minutes.

Part 3 is a rocky ascent pretty much the whole way. The first part has water runoff running on the rocks so you are climbing slippery rocks but we never encountered any loose breakaways. Once the water stops, the rocks get bigger and the ascent gets more steep. Then you finally reach a dirt trail with less rocks but still very steep. Once you crest this section, there are more rocks and you stay level and corner until you take short descent to one of the most beautiful sites you ever imagined! This part took us 45 minutes as well.

We then spent an hour enjoying the views and had some lunch. Descending back down is everything in reverse and we did it in 2 hours. Again we were going at a pretty fast pace so not typical to make it in less than 3 hours. Most people we spoke to took 4-6 hours.

Tips: if you want to see the sunrise, you must either stay at refugio or leave really early. Crowds build as the day goes so earlier the better. There were a handful of people we passed who were coming back from sunrise views but when we got there at 10:00am, we only saw 2-3 other groups and about 20 people total when we left at 11.

Weather changes drastically which is good and bad. Luckily for us, it was a lucky day where it was about 70 and sunny the whole time.

Pack light, use trekking poles, take your time and enjoy!!! (Don’t go fast like we did.)

You must go up there to watch sunrise. We started from central camp around 3.40am with headlamps and reached around 7am. It was freezing cold. The place is magical as the color of the rock turns to yellow and red.

In order for us to hike for sunrise, we stayed in Hotel Las Torres Patagonia for one night and Refugio El Chileno for the second night. Start hiking from Hotel Las Torres Patagonia in the morning, we reached Refugio pretty early, so I decided continue hiking to Mirador base. Next morning, I got up 3am and hiking again for sunrise. Afternoon and morning view was different. The last 2 km is very difficult to hike in my view. Definitely it was more challenging and dangerous hiking in the dark. We were so lucky the weather was sunny and calm for our visit dates. Keep in mind, the last part of hike trail close later in the afternoon to avoid people staying at the Mirador base for sunset.

Really enjoyable day. Took 8 hours which is fairly quick. Need to be reasonable fit and used to trekking although some people on the hike clearly were not.
It’s a there and back trek and none of it is flat apart from the first and last 2km. Then it’s climb to windy pass , lose height to Chilean camping then off climbing again with more up and down before the steep climb to the lake. Absolutely stunning scenery. Went with guides from Rio Serrano hotel who were awesome.

This hike is absolutely stunning. We were lucky with sunny weather but the winds topped out at 80 + kph so essentially 50 mph. Tip: Bring goggles or some other fully protected eyewear my Maui Jim glasses didn't cut it. The wind was blowing so hard on the windy pass that little shards of rocks got into my eyes even though the sun glasses.

This hike is very well maintained and you can easily hike it in one day in & out. Bring lunch, snacks and water. You can drink the glacier water. If you are from the PNW I would say this hike isn't more challenging than Granite Mountain. It's a little harder than Mt. Si.

Just make sure to bring a camera! It's amazing!!!

Base de las Torres in Chilean Patagonia was amazing! We took a 10-hour hike in this 18-km. trail (as opposed to a suggested 8 hours but actually I would say the trail starts from the public car park in front of Hotel Las Torres and we had to add in a few more kilometers to that figure). The views along the way are great and very enjoyable. The difficulty is spread throughout the hike as we gradually gained elevation. Unfortunately, we arrived later than expected and were not permitted to walk up to the Base (it was closed at 15.45 and we arrived at 16.30). There is an option to ride a horse, which will cover almost half the trek in the beginning, saving you energy for an expense.

P.S. As you probably know, Patagonian weather regularly switches so bring layers and water-resistant/proof clothes.

Long day of hiking. Looking at 8 hours. It is not crazy difficult, but not easy. Amazing place to take pictures and have lunch. We, with the luck of the Gods and planetary alignment (sarcasm), were the only ones to be found anywhere near there for an hour. Trail can get crowded, very quickly, so best to go earlier before the day-trippers show up around 9-11 am. We left at 7-730, which was perfectly timed.

The view is fantastic and worth all the effort. The last hour is very tough and you should think about that before you even start out (the rewarding view is right at the end, so if you turn back it may be very wise but will feel like wasted effort). That said, young children also made it up there.
