Whether you’re searching for a breathtaking view or just pure serenity, you will find both at Tsunomine Shrine. Take the sun-lit road 4km up the mountains (have 600 yen to pass the toll road gate by car and don’t forget to pull over on the way to fully appreciate the scenery). From the parking area you can either ride the ropeway (500 yen round trip per person), relaxing and enjoying the view, or walk all the way up the stairs to the shrine.
Tsunomine Shrine is dedicated to Kashiha Himeno Okami (and is said to be the only one in Japan housing this goddess). Kashiha Himeno is believed to be a saint protector and the deity of longevity. Thus, people come to pray for her help healing illnesses and for safe travels. Those engaged in dangerous work can also pray for their safety.
It is strongly believed that even a seriously sick person will be healed of their illness or injury if a relative or acquaintance bathes in fresh water, cleanses their mind and body, and prays with sincerity. Traditionally it is done at the earliest time of the day (which is midnight), as Kashinami Himegami can save only one life a day.
If you happen to be somewhere around during New Year, you can enjoy watching the first sunrise of the year on its grounds.
On the 17th of every month there’s a festival. For instance, in autumn the shrine grounds hold a local Sumo tournament, while in spring you can witness the dance performance.
Toll road fees: Regular sized cars, light motor vehicles 600 yen. Motorcycles 400 yen
Open: 6:00~22:00
Lift Fares: Roundtrip: 500 yen. Up only: 350 yen. Down only: 200 yen.
Open: 9:00~17:00
