It is worth taking the detour to Zalongo, although the mount is visible for miles around. The history behind the momument is poignant and tragic in the extreme, and the monument is a fitting tribute to those amazing women.
Park at the monastery (just up the hill from the Kassope ruins), be brave and climb the 400 steps to the top of the mount. Make sure you take water if it is hot, but it is worth the effort for a close-up view of the monument and a magnificent view over the bay, Preveza and across to the islands of Antipaxos and Paxos.
A fitting way to honour the memory of the Souliot women.

Other than that, worth a visit, the history behind this monument is heartbreaking. Worth stopping by. Nice monastery just where you park your car.

It was ok. Drive was terrific but hike up was not worth the view from top. Beautiful view on the way up however.

We have lived in Epirus for 5 years and finally got around to visiting the Zalongo monument having driven passed it hundreds of times.
The surrounding area is beautiful and as we went out of season we were the only car in the car park.
The views on the climb up (400 steps) were stunning although you had to traipse through piles of goat droppings!!
At the top we opened the gate and were met with more piles of goat poo along with flies and wasps and the smell was quite overpowering!
The plaque on the monument had been defaced and there were at least 8 wreaths that were long dead just lying by the monument.
We had brought sandwiches but didn’t want to eat them at the top due to the mess and smell. It’s such a shame Greece don’t appreciate the beautiful countryside and sites of archaeological interest that are on their doorstop.
After 5 years of driving by we were disappointed. Come on Greece get your act together, you have a stunning coastline, beautiful countryside all ruined by litter, dumping and lack of TLC.

The Zalongo monument is worth stopping by. It's tragical history is sad but brave, an the the view from the top is really beautiful. A lot of stairs to walk up, but really doable of you just take it a bit slow.

Very nice retreat if you are in the vicinity. Sharp climb, but not so hard for overcoming. Climbing will be awarded with a beautiful view.

A wonderful memorial to the women and children of Zalongo...400 steps+ is a very steep climb so don't make the mistake we made of doing it during the hottest part of the day...make sure you take water with you! The views from the top are superb!

This is a difficult site to enjoy, but so important. Around 1823 60 some woment and children danced in a circle singing, then jumping to their deaths, Why, they knew the Turks were coming for them, and when found they would be beatened, raped, or mercifully killed. A trader Greek told the Turks were to find the women and children. Below is a lovely small church, built in the 1800's, and a sweet small store run by the Nuns, an absolute must.to enjoy. There is plenty of parking and a nice place for to enjoy a lunch. And, plenty of shade.

This is a must see location. The history, while so sad, but is important. There are many steps, over 100, but "What a View!" when reaching the top. Also, going to the small church, built in the 1800's, and chatting with the Nuns was quite special
