Not much was open but it was a super cool vibe to be the only ones in the entire Pueblo. It was almost like a recently abandoned ghost town with music playing in the background but complete silence otherwise. I've been here prior to the pandemic and it was always so packed full of people so maybe the effect was greater since I'd seen it full so many times!

As far as shops, the cigar shop is great and the lady working there was extremely helpful. Just note that due to the pandemic, not many cigars are being made. They didn't have many of the popular cigars due to this shortage so we had to choose some others but she was so helpful and we ended up getting some great stuff.

Other things that are currently open are a little general store, the spa, the gym and the bank. The bank by the way is pretty much useless you can only take out Cuban pesos which can only be used for tips. Everything in the stores costs convertible pesos which aren't used anymore so the only way to get stuff is with Visa although some shops accept USD

We decided to get away from the resort for a few hours one afternoon and took a ride to Plaza Estrella in a 53 Caddy. Place was just okay. The view from the top of the tower was nice however be careful on the way up as many of the railings are broken or in poor condition. Many permanent shops were closed and temporary vendors had set up tables.
Lots of these vendors were selling cigars and souvenirs. The cigars were displayed in the hot sun and not stored in a humidor which made me choose to not buy them
In one of the shops we bought a 1 Litre bottle of 3 year old Havana Club rum. I thought the price seemed high at CUC$9.80 but attributed it to inflation. To our surprise and disappointment the same bottle of rum was selling for US$6.75 at the airport Duty Free shops. Even with the new pricing policies at the airports it was clear that we are ripped off since there is no "market pricing" for legally sold rum. I imagine that the same would have happened if we bought cigars too.

It's a bit like a film set, and built solely for tourists, but still a reasonable way to spend an hour or two away from your resort. Ours was close enough to walk. There are souvenirs to buy at not-too-outrageous prices, but not a huge selection. Several restaurants, a gym (closed when we visited) and even a bowling alley. We had a drink where we were serenaded by a couple of guys singing and playing.

Great selection on wood carvings and other little Knick knack souvenirs. Could use a better selection of tshirts. We found something for everyone on our list. The classic cars as taxis were a great addition to this site

Visited this market almost daily because it was so close to my resort. It has different vendors every day all of which have reasonable prices. I fully recommend the chicken fingers and french fries at the honey house & the pizza at the Italian eatery.

It's a nice market for you to buy hand craft items from locals. Everything from clothes, to cigars, bags, souvenirs to bring back home.

We didn't go into any restaurants but the menus were available to see. Everything was very affordable and the locals working were really friendly.

We did check out the bowling lane. 5 cucs per person for one game which was fine. They only had two out of six lanes working, so we did feel rushed when another family was waiting.

We did end up going twice and there were some different vendors both days.

We were staying at Sanctuary Grand Memories and it was about 15-20min walk which was a good way to see the whole resort.
Check it out - support the locals!

The Plaza La Estrella is a nice little market for resort-goers and travelers who are looking for a bit of a break from what the immediate resort has to offer. If you have intentions to stay on Cayo Santa Maria for your entire stay, this is a convenient place to get all the souvenirs, rum and cigars you need for taking home and it has much more selection to offer compared to the resort stores. If you can venture up eight flights of stairs, you have a great view from the top of the tower.

La Estrella is perfectly located near the surrounding resorts and offers many little souvenirs for travellers.

It is cheap. Kiosks change everyday so don’t wait if you find something.

You will find restaurants and cafés ($) and entertainment (bowling, spa, shows).

It might need a little spruce , but it does the job!

Cute shopping centre with lots of souvenirs, bowling alley, cigar shop, ice cream, restaurants, and a spa. We ate pizza at the Italian restaurant. It was yummy and inexpensive. If you need a break from the resort food, try the pizza.

Great appreciation of this cute Cuban village, full of life and colours. A nice change outside the hotel resorts.

All types of handicrafts that I had not seen anywhere else. Too happy to buy some gifts for my niece’s children who live in U.K.

I suggest to go early in the morning; otherwise, you will start cooking around 11:00. Easy to find shady spots though or small places to take a beer or a coffee.

Vendors are friendly. I even had my portrait designed in 3 minutes by a Cuban child. Nice human touch.

Bring your passport at the Bank if you wish to exchange some dollars into pesos!

Taxi rides back to the hotels is the trend since buses are not passing so often or don’t go necessarily in the direction you want.

I really enjoyed my visit there, and would recommend it to all visitors of Cayo Santa Maria.
