About
Admire the full length and vastness of the Great Aletsch Glacier in all its glory – from the Eggishorn, the 2869 m-high viewpoint. Just turn around for a view of the higher peaks: the Mönch, the Eiger, the Jungfrau, the Wannenhorn and the Finsteraarhorn, and to the west the Weisshorn, the Mischabel group with the Dom, and the Matterhorn itself form a breathtaking 360° panorama. This impressive viewpoint is just a 20-minute journey from Fiesch; the change at Fiescheralp is easy and suitable for those with limited mobility. The Eggishorn is suitable for wheelchairs and prams.

To get here is a two-cable car ride from the train station. The first of these trips is less painful than the second and runs to a time table that is commensurate with the size of the gondola. The second gondola is smaller, has a shorter journey and is also run to a time table. You are going to wait a long time when it is busy because even though the gondola cannot accommodate the queue it sticks rigidly to the timetable so you have to wait for the next one by which time the queue is long again etc, etc, etc. The same on the decent. Pure madness when a return journey only takes minutes. I say this to warn you as it may well put you off but I urge you to persevere because the views you get at the top are outstanding. There is not a lot at the top, a small café and vantage points but oh my goodness, what landscape!

If you come to Fiesch by train or by car it is perfect for going up the mountain. The train station is in the same building as the gondola. The parking lot is right across the street and you can pay for your parking ticket with cash or card either in the station, in the parking or right at the exit. Hat off to the Swiss infrastructure! We took the gondola to Fiescheralp. There you have plenty of restaurants and terraces, accomodation and ski slopes, perfect place for walking too. From Fiescheralp we took the cable car to Eggishorn from where we could see the beautiful Aletsch Glacier. I could even spot a Ferrata trail that takes you all the way up there. It is said you can even spot the Matterhorn from this point but we were still under the influence of the sands from Sahara so it was quite murky. I guess it is best to come see this spot in summer. When buying a gondola ticket, pay attention: sometimes the cashier does not have the head-set on and does not hear you. It happened in our case and first gave us tickets only to Fiescheralp. If I had not ask for confirmation that I can also reach Eggishorn...

If the weather is good, sunny and clear you can't get a more beautiful view of the mountain tops as from the top of Eggishorn. Absolutely spectacular!

I took the cable car from Fiesch (accessed by train, with the cable car station in the middle of the small town or there is a good size parking lot for those who drive). I've always believed getting there is half the fun and this trip defiantly delivers! The first cable car/gondola takes you to the midway station at Fiescheralp with amazing views of the valley. As you exit, you can either enjoy the very little town with several restaurants and souvenir shops or continue on. I would suggest spending some time in Fiescheralp, especially if the hang gliders are taking off; its fascinating to see them "jump" and on a great day 8-12 colorful gliders can be seen floating through the air. Nothing more delightful as sitting in the warm sun and enjoying lunch, in awe of the mountains.

Continue on to the next cable car...times are easy to locate and go frequently and be wowed by the accent into heaven! On top you have an amazing 360 degree view of the mountain tops. The Matterhorn is easy to identify but the Aletsch glacier (UNESCO World Heritage site) may steal your gaze away; its so beautiful. You can hike the glacier from September 14-October 25th. I didn't but had I brought proper shoes and walking sticks, I sure would have tired. At the top there is a small restaurant, bathrooms, a souvenir shop and lots of hikes, most which require proper clothing and shoes. Remember you are at 9,600 feet so move slowly so you don't get dizzy, breath deeply and don't tax yourself.

If it's a sunny day, don't forget your sunscreen! Its so easy to get burned! Dress warmly in layers as in the sun you are hot and in the shade or windy areas it can get very cold quickly!

Compared to other sites popular with tourists, like Glacier 3000, Jungfrau or Titlis which are quite expensive to access, this two gondola ride and magnificent views offers great value! Highly recommended on a beautiful day.

You can reach Eggishorn either by cable car from Fresh or Fiesheralp, OR, by hiking up all the way, but I would suggest start your hike from Fiescheralp as the view would be more exposed with Matterhorn, Fiesch Glacier within your view. Once you have reached the top ( Eggishorn cable car) you either have the option to relax and have a coffee in a bar/lough, or go further for another 15 minutes to reach Eggishorn ( Scramble rookie tho!). The view at the top is amazing; you could see all the most famous mountains in Switzerland: Zerman, Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau, as well as Aletsch Glacier!

If you want to get the most beautiful and full view of the Great Aletsch Glacier, then you have to go up to the Eggishorn, which is exactly over the middle part of the glacier. You see either the upper part of the glacier where it starts, and much of the lower part.
You can see the glacier right when coming out of the cable car station.
Be sure you come on a clear day without wind.
The cable car goes up in two seperate sections, first from Fiesch to Fiescheralp, at 2222m, and another section from Fiescheralp to Eggishorn. So you can rest in the middle.
Take in consideration, that the upper cable car station is at almost 2900m. So not for people who don't feel well at this hight.

This is well worth whatever it costs to go up (probably about 100 francs for a couple round trip) and it's worth taking time (and some stair climbing exercise) to walk to the top of the Eggishorn. The views are amazing in all directions and every few feet you have a different view. The outdoor restaurant near the lift at the top is great too - we had an excellent fondue and what a setting to enjoy it in! If you can stay a night in Fiescheralp to break up the trip, better yet.

This is a truly amazing place to visit. The scenery is as good as it gets in Europe. You can combine it with a ride on the Furka pass and will have a great experience.

I arrived by train from Brig only to find that the second cable car is currently NOT OPERATING. There were no signs in English and the ticket seller tried to explain the situation but I don’t speak German.

From a timetable I found on the wall it appears it stops in late April and doesn’t start again until early in June when the summer tourist season starts.

So forget it if you’re travelling in May and early June.

We stayed at Fiescheralp. The walk to the Aletsch Glacier was easy even in a misty day via the tunnel. The Glacier is very close to the trek. We saw some people walking on the Glacier ice with guides. We walked anti-clockwise and ended up in Buttmeralp. Some conflicting information gathered about walking back from Buttmeralp to Fiecheralp, and we ended up taking the cable car down the valley, went to Fiesch by train and up Fiescheralp by cable car again. It was a strange experience with some 'last car' being caught just in time. Views from the cable car station at Eggishornn and the peak itself were great. There are a number of varied treks in that area and certainly worth a revisit on finer days.

Eggishorn has a fantastic view over the Aletsch glacier. All the high peaks of central Switzerland can be seen on top of the glacier.
