Sensible footwear recommended. There are steps down to the cave entrance, so not really suitable for anyone with mobility issues.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 28, 2023
- Becki TOdense, Denmark102 contributionsFocus on the cavesA majestic, historical and interesting area! The cave hike was an absolute highlight, only such a shame that several tourists choose to use the place as a public toilet, instead of taking in the history and the wonders of nature... The local village next to the caves does not leave much to the imagination, with expensive tourist traps all over the place. Do the cave hike and move on!Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 18, 2023
- AndyCornsBury, United Kingdom666 contributionsLovely areaWow, the Monumento Natural de Ajuy is a lovely view. A nice little walk from the car park and along the way you may get to see a few chipmunks roaming around. There are a couple of viewpoints were you can get nice photos. The walk down to the caves is via an uneven path and steps but is very safe. Inside the cave can be slippy be careful if you go further back in the dark. A great view and sceneryVisited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 8, 2024

This little village was our last stop on a day trip to the west and it turned out to be the best choice to end the day.
Tiny sleepy village with a beautiful black sand beach and interesting caves just around the rock. It was a surprise that these caves have a special place in the islands history.
Reserve a good several hours for this place if you want to do both the beach and the caves.
We did visit both caves down and it was an amazing feeling to be there.

One of the highlights of Fuerteventura. If you are interested in geology / industrial history etc, this is a 'must visit'. Can get a bit busy some days so evenings are probably best to visit. Great at sunset and wonderful coastal views.

I have never heard of this place and went randomly here during my stay in Fuerteventura. And absolutely loved the rugged coastline and easy to reach caves! Climbing into them and enjoying amazing views was one of my highlight during my stay.

The route to the monument is challenging, & sensible footwear is recommended, but well worth the trek & when you walk down the last set of steep steps you will be amazed at this very tall structure.

In the past few days a company claiming to have legal title to the access to these 20 million year old caves has started to charge for access. The charge of 7.00 Euros for Adults and 3 Euros for children is an outrage and totally again'st the "Spanish National Monument" status of this area. DO NOT PAY TO VISIT THESE CAVES

Having visited Fuerteventura for over 20 years, today on a vist to Ajuy, we were shocked to discover that one of the most stunning scenic walks along the coast has been "apparently bought" by a group claiming to now own this historic piece of coastline. I have visited this village a number of times over the years to walk the path, look at the caves and eat in the great seafood restaurants......we won't be going back.
When you arrive to walk along the path there is little indication that anything has changed since our last visit 12 months ago....apart from a badly written sign at the foot of the cliffs which states "public road is free" . As you ascend the first part of the path and make your way around to the caves you are now confronted by a sign reading " private property" and a group of 5 men asking for payment at a makeshift entrance - when questioned I was told that a group had recently bought this part of the cliffs and introduced charges to visitors 4 weeks ago.
It would be interesting to know whether this part of the coastline has really been purchased & who from? Does this group have public liability insurance to cover their paying visitors? Why have they only bought the 'end' part of the path? Why not take payment at the start?
We did not pay the €7 each asked & when we returned to the village and questioned our waitress she told us not to pay & that it is "illegal" activity.
How is this being allowed to happen? This can only harm the good people of Ajuy who welcome visitors to their lovely fishing village. If tourists feel they are being ripped off they will stop coming, which would be a great shame.

We visited the caves in Ajuy and they were spectacular. There's quite a bit of walking to get out to the caves but great if you are up for a bit of a ramble!
Although there is a path it's probably not ideal for anyone with mobility issues or buggies etc as it's quite uneven and there are quite a few steps.
We would recommend the caves though, worth a trip and something a bit different from just lying on the beach!

You need to travel through the lovely town of Pajara to find the little cove of Ajuy (pronounced ahoy ) on the west coast. It has the famous caves which are quite stunning, also a lovely beach and 2 or 3 places to eat. We tried the fish restaurant closest to the beach and were in for a sensational treat ! We are are very particular family when it comes to food- all able to cook fairly well and consequently quite critical. Happily we were all delighted with our choice of fish of the day, some of us had fried , others chose grilled and received perfectly cooked huge portions with potatoes and alioli for around 12 euro per head. Our bill for 7 of us totalled 95 including a drink.
For those who have discovered this lovely island but not Ajuy, it is well worth seeking out.

Not that I have seen. A bit stormy that day too! There is another beach North of Ajuy but didn't get that far, too windy.
