Cachi is a gem! So much more genuine and unspoilt than Cafayate or the other more well-known villages in North West Argentina. Beautiful adobe houses well laid out around the central square. Several great restaurants! A beautiful church, and a very relaxing atmosphere. But best of all: In order to get to Cachi, you have to drive one of the most beautiful roads in Argentina, either the RN40 from Cafayate (or from Susques), or the road from Salta up the Cuesta del Obispo and through rthe National Park. These are equally spectacular! So not only does Cachi in itself merit the trip, but any road going there merits a significant detour! Do not drive Salta-Cachi-Cafayate in 1 day! Stay over in Cachi. The drive is too long (not in miles but in hours), and you wont benefit from all the great stops on the way (Cachi, Molinos, Quebrada and Nayional park).

Driving from Cachi to Cafayate is a long ride, mostly on gravel road, but what a surprisingly wonderful experience! We started early and it took 4 hours and 40 minutes before we arrived in Cafayate. An old Inka road, full of historical, archeological sites, wild nature, various tribes and small settlements along the way. Adobe houses, some with solar panels, cultivated land, animals, wild nature, spectular mountains, colours and formations, you'll want to stop and take pictures all the time as there is a new wonder around the next corner! Road is ok, some places are very narrow but passable. Not much traffic, but enough to feel safe if something should happen. The last 28 km (on tarmac road) is a bit boring, no more sensational sights. This definitely ranks as one of the highlights during our six weeks journey in Argentina and Uruguay. Do it!

Leaving Salta we drove through spectacular scenery which covered 3 different vegetation types and climates. The mountainous scenery is amazing as is the drive as you climb up to over 3200m. The high desert was windy but warm. Cachi is very nice for a few hours. Eat at La Esouwa Celso Bar on the corner of the main square. The goat stew was nice as were the stuffer peppers. Of note was the 2018 Puna Malbec. A local high altitude wine that was amazing for only 500 pesos. This is a well recommended day trip

Cachi is a quaint town in the desert. Lovely white buildings fill the area with plenty of places to sit, enjoy an Argentine meal and people watch. You only need to spend a couple of hours there.
The best part is the road trip to Cachi. The desert and mountain landscape is breathtaking. The ascent into the clouds will amaze you. To drive up into the clouds and then be above them will be a memorable experience.

Cachi is a charming little town with homes and buildings built of adobe and lies just above the Rio Calchaqui with views of the snow capped mountains in the distance. In the tranquil Central Plaza there is a Spanish colonial church, Iglesia San José, a National Historical Monument and a small but very good archaeological museum, Museo Arqueológico de Cachi Pío Pablo Díaz.
Nice place to take a stroll ...stop by a café for a coffee and enjoy the fresh air.

Cachi is a sleepy little small town, but really lovely and quite walkable. There is probably not much to do in the town itself but there is a lot going on around once you drive away. We were here during January 2018, and this being rainy season, we found some of the gravel roads around Cachi were impassable, so need to keep this in mind. We did check the road condition with the local police before starting out, and were told all was clear. But we still got stuck in the wet mud! The gravel muddy wet road can be rather deceptive and we pretty much had to dig ourselves out of it as in the almost 2.5hrs we were stuck trying to get free, no other cars passed by! We even helped another set of tourists back to Cachi, who were in an even bigger trouble, having stuck their hire car in the middle of a river. So be cautious and be safe.

Located at three thousand meters Cachi is a pretty tough place to get to but well worth the effort. The road to Cachi can be trying since there are many unpaved sections that must be very difficult esp0ecially during a rain. There is virtually nothing nearby and most of the time you are traveling through very desolate country that has its own special attraction. The village of some two to three thousand is immaculate--every house and building seems to have been whitewashed at the same time. There is no garbage and no clutter. The museum is outstanding, there is a good variety of hotels available and the restaurants we frequented were very good. If you like peace and quiet combined with a unique high altitude atmosphere this is the place to visit. And plan to stay for more than one day to get the real feel for the place. We only stayed the one day and regretted having to leave so quickly.

We Loved visiting Cachi. The overall experience was wonderful. It's a small town that you can even miss if you drive by to speedy....You'll be missing out big time if that happens! It's a dreamy little town, you can't miss the Museum, it's got Amazing native pieces! The lovely Church stands tall and proud in the middle of town, if you catch the sunset behind it, you'll be so fortunate to have witnessed it! Oliver Restaurant is a MUST!! THE BEST SALTA EMPANADAS ,the owner is Internationally hired to make them! ENJOY CACHI !!!

Cachi is a white jewel on the mountain. The road to go there from Salta is incredibly beautiful, just try to seat on the left side of the bus to enjoy the view and take the one that leaves from Salta at 7 am.
I recommend to take the 'nighttime walking tour' with Ilda Corimayo, you can book it at the touristic office ( everyday except sunday). I don't tell u about it... but believe me Ilda is a great woman and you will fall in love with her and this experience.
I also loved the ruta40 from Cachi to Cafayate. If you don't have a car, don't miss it anyway, even if it can be tricky... You should take the bus to molinos, than arrange a remis to agastaco (you can share with other travellers) and get another bus to cafayate. The best part is from molinos to angastaco.
Viracocha restaurant in cachi is good.
Try to talk to people and spend some time with them, they're very nice.
I recommend the camping, they also have dormitories and a cheap swimming pool.

Most visitors only stay one night, either on the way to Salta or to Cafayate.
Not much to do, after you have seen the church, the plaza and the archeological museum. Just sit down at one of the bar / restaurants and have a one liter beer...
