Our group of five booked this private van tour while visiting Progresso on a Carnival Cruise in November/December 2022.
Rene was our guide, and Antonio was our driver, and they were both outstanding. Knowledgeable, outgoing, friendly, and obviously very proud of their home. Our tour was fully customizable, and we visited the Myapan ruins, a cenote, and finished our tour with an authentic and homemade lunch.
Ruins - absolutely beautiful site with lots of information shared. Two of us opted to climb the the ruins and it was an absolute workout, you will want to be in good shape to be able to climb up, as well as back down. Up was a good workout, but not too scary. Down is another story, as you come down a very steep set of narrow stairs facing forwards so as to see where to place your hands and feet. Absolutely worth it for the view from the top; and it was noted that in the next two years access to climb will likely stop to help preserve the structure.
Cenote - not our first cenote, but by far and away the most stunning. There were very steep and narrow wooden stairs down to the water, where there is a platform just below the surface, as well as a ladder to allow easy access into the water. One of our group was nearing 70 and in moderately good health and with patience was able to navigate the stairs up and down. Crystal clear water in shades of blue and green, with lots of little fish in the water. You can see birds and their mud nests, and you can hear the bats living in the hollows within the rock walls. There are places to jump from, or you can simply swim or float. We opted to spend the majority of our time here as it was the most beautiful and relaxing part of our cruise.
Lunch - we had a freshly prepared lunch at the cenote site before heading back to the ship and it was the best food we have ever had while on vacation. Fresh, flavorful, and more than all of us could possible eat. The hibiscus tea was amazing and a great compliment to the food.
At no time did we feel rushed, or fear that we wouldn't make it back to port in time. Rene made it very clear that he was aware of the 'back on board time' and reassured us repeatedly throughout the day that we were on time to be back in port with room to spare in case we wanted some time to peruse the shops before getting back on board.
This has been one of our favorite cruise tours of all time, and we will not hesitate to book another tour with this group the next time we are in Progresso.

This agency was absolutely perfect from their price, guide, itinerary, and local partners. We booked the Hole Enchilada Custom tour literally 3 days prior to the tour date, which included the Mayapan Ruins + 2 Cenotes (open and cave) + Maya Lunch. They were super quick to organize and respond, and super flexible. We paid $4,500 Mx pesos for 3 people which was a great price for a private custom tour. We had basically endless time at the cenote and really took the time to enjoy it (sometimes without other tourists).
Our tour guide Rene was THE BEST ever! His English, amount of knowledge, passion to share about his culture, and service was exceptional and above and beyond. The lunch with the Mayan Doña and family was lovely as they shared their culture with us. They were really intentional in partnering with families, small businesses, and community coops to support the local community and build relationships with them. During COVID, some of the tour guides went into the communities in lock down to provide material support. Would highly recommend this company (founded by Canadians!) And please tip the guide well because we regret not tipping him enough!

Our sincere thanks for your wonderful and detailed review. It was our pleasure sharing Yucatan with you and we are delighted that you enjoyed the authentic day with Rene.
We also appreciate you sharing our efforts in partnering and providing for the local communities where we visit. The communities are so generous in sharing their wonderful culture and cenotes and we feel it is important to give back when we can. It truly is a special relationship that we have, and we are so thankful and grateful for their trust and partnership.
Once again, thank you!

We had a wonderful time on our trip! We were met at the port by our guide. He had a sign with our name and was easy to find. He spoke English and Spanish very well. Yucatan can be hot throughout the year, but we were offered cold beverages before and after every stop from an ice chest that they kept well stocked.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and was able to tell us history about the different areas that we drove through on the way to our stops. At the Mayopan ruins he was able to tell us about the culture and corrected a few misconceptions about the Mayan civilization. I didn't expect to learn so much. I was grateful he was there for us. He provided us a tour and spoke on the history, different points of interest, and answered every question we had. What made Mayopan unique from other ruins we had visited in the past is that you could climb the stairs of the structures and the stone carvings have been very well preserved.
The Nahyah cenote was stunning. Beautiful crystal clear waters that were not too cold. They set up a rope swing that our group (11 years to 60+) all felt comfortable swinging from. There was also a rock face to jump from if you felt brave enough. At the bottom of the stairs you can jump 2 feet into the water or there was a short ladder you could use to get in or out.
Lunch was excellent and abundant. We were served a home cooked meal at our last stop which was a short drive from the cenote. They were very welcoming.
They were kind enough to oblige our groups request to make a stop to buy Mexican Doritos on the way back to the port.
At the end we were taken back to the port where we met with plenty of time to get back to our cruise ship. We felt safe and well cared for the entire time.

Thank you for your detailed and comprehensive review of the "Semi-Private Above & Below" Adventure. Your review will certainly assist future guests in their excursion and vacation plans.
We are thrilled that you enjoyed your day with guide: Rene and that you appreciated the authenticity of the experience.
We do appreciate your specific reference regarding the ease to find us, the stocked ice chest and getting back to the cruise ship with plenty of time to spare . . . as these will help our cruise guests (from Progreso) to determine whether this is an excursion suitable for them.
Once again, we sincerely appreciate you taking the time to write this review.

The first day was at Mayapan and two jungle Cenotes. A little difficult if your not in shape but still beautiful. We had a local family prepare lunch which included a tres leches cake in celebration of an Anniversary and my birthday.
The second day was spent in Valladoilid. We ate a delicious lunch at a restaurant next to Cenote Zaci and swam in Cenote Xkeken and Cenote Samula Dzitnup. We also walked around the town of Valladoilid, which is full of culture! Awesome family memories made 💚 Our guides were very knowledgeable of the area and history. It made for a great learning experience for the children as well as the adults. Also, I would like to say that we stayed in Chuburna, right outside Progreso. Yucatan Cenote Adventures provided airport transportation from and to Merida airport for a very small fee for our group of 11 people!

This was an amazing day! Guadalupe, our guide, was so knowledgeable. We leaned so much about the area and history. Our day started with pier pickup in a private tour van, followed by a stop at a colonial era church and market for tamales. We explored the last Mayan village, swam in a cenote, and ate an authentic lunch at a 17th century hacienda. Then, we were dropped off at the pier. We all felt incredibly safe and that we got really great value for our money. I cannot recommend this company enough!

Another fabulous excursion with YucatanCenote! This was our 5th adventure with these guys (4 on cruise days and 1 on a land based trip.) It never ceases to amaze me how unique each adventure is, and how well thought out and carefully they plan your experience!
The Yucatan can be, especially for a cruise port, tricky to figure out what to do with your time. The area is filled with culture, amazing natural beauty, and some of the most genuinely hospitable people you will find anywhere. This trip we visited friends. Our guide Rene took us to a stunning cenote with cliff jump opportunities, a rope swing, and beautiful emerald green clear water for swimming. So refreshing! Then lunch with a local family at Carlos' house. Such an amazing and authentic Yucatecan feast! It was awesome visiting this family again!
For anyone researching a port stop in Progreso: this is the one. Take a look at all the adventures, pick out what sounds best for your group, and book it! You won't be with a bus full of your fellow cruise passengers. It's so much more personal and unique! If you love to travel off the beaten path, that's what these guys offer. We have been to over 20 Caribbean ports on our many cruises and this is the most unique and professional company we have ever encountered. You won't regret your decision to spend your day with them.
To Ruth, Chris, Rene, Nymzi, Miguel, Carlos & family: thanks for such a memorable day. It was very special to both me and John! See you on our next trip!

We couldn't have had a better experience with Yucatan Cenote Eco-Adventures. First of all, they were so amazingly easy to coordinate with. We were on a cruise out of Mobile, AL and we had gotten away late. That had Carnival changing our port days and going to Progreso a day earlier than previously scheduled. Ruth and Chris had already been made aware and emailed me before Carnival even did letting me know not to stress, all the changes had been made and they were ready and waiting for us! It was such a relief.
Then we get to port and Rene and Eric pick us up. They were simply amazing. Eric was an excellent driver who took amazing care of us and got us around safely with no issues. It was a wonderful sprinter van that picked us up and we had more than enough comfortable room for our group of 7. They were ready with bottled water, cokes and sprites for the kids!
Rene was probably the best tour guide/anthropologist/historian we've ever had on a guided tour. He was so knowledgeable about the Yucatan, Mayan Culture and Mexico in general. It was an absolutely stunning tour of Mayapan and the most wonder, secluded cenote!
Lastly, the local meal cooked by a local family was just so genuine and sincere, we couldn't ask for a better trip. The food was amazing!
We absolutely will be coming back. We absolutely will be telling all of our friends and will absolutely recommend without any type of reservation or hesitation the Yucatan Cenote Eco-Adventures group for all trips in the Yucatan!
Thank you so much for an absolutely incredible day that will live in my family's memories forever!

WOW, thank you so very much for your detailed Review of the "Holy Guacamole Maya Adventure" with guide Rene and driver Eric. We are so happy that you and your family enjoyed this authentic excursion in Yucatan. We are so fortunate to have Rene as a member of our Team as he is so passionate about his heritage and the Yucatan culture. We saw the video of the Cenote jump ... way to go! We are delighted that you enjoyed the meal that Rita prepared for your family.
We appreciate your review and recommendations and look forward to sharing another Adventure with you and your family next time you are in Yucatan.
Take care. Gracias.

We (6 friends) booked a shore excursion through Yucatan Cenote for our Progresso day on a Carnival cruise. The excursion definitely exceeded our expectations! Our guide Juan Carlos and Tony our driver were a pleasure to spend time with, and we learned so much from Juan Carlos about the Yucatan area, the Mayan culture, and the culture of Mexico today. The ruins were fantastic and I was so thankful to have Juan Carlos there to help us understand what we were seeing. The Cenote that we swam in was so much more than we were expecting—such an amazing experience. Some of us were a little nervous about using the rope swing, so Tony volunteered to demonstrate for us—which we thought was so kind, and made us all willing to try it. After swimming in the Cenote, we had the most incredible lunch at the home of a local family. I’m still dreaming about those tacos. Our group is so glad we did this excursion, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it!!

We had a fantastic experience with Yucatan Cenote! Our guide Santiago was patient, knowledgeable, friendly, professional, and really made the experience what it was. We cannot say enough good things about him! The company was communicative and was great with recommending specific experiences given the diversity in ability and adventurous nature in our small group, making it so easy to book an experience that fit for all of us. Pickup was timely, the sites we visited were amazing, and our Mayan family hosted lunch was an absolutely wonderful and unique experience. The tour was well worth the price and we would recommend Yucatan Cenote to anyone. We will definitely be back for our next adventure in the area!

We booked this tour for when our cruise ship docked in Progresso, and for me it was the highlight of the entire cruise. Santiago was a friendly, informative guide, who wonderfully explained everything and shared his own anecdotes about growing up in the area. There were only 8 couples, and while the van ride was over an hour long to and from the sites, the van was comfortable, clean, and air conditioned, and bottled water was offered the entire time. We spent just enough time at Chichen Itza before the heat got to be too much (I can only imagine what it’s like there in the summer!), and the more brave members of our group got to climb the pyramid. After that it was on to the cenote, and I really enjoyed the drive through the villages on the way, and seeing the local people and animals. The cenote itself is tended by a local family, and while one member of our party balked at the fact that locals also were swimming there (eye roll), I thought it was awesome. I was the only person too scared to go down the rather rustic looking wooden steps that led 30 feet into the cenote, but I still had a wonderful time. My boyfriend chose the alternate route of jumping in, and my advice would be to make sure you hit the water perfectly straight, because he has some nasty bruises to show for it. The authentic lunch was the perfect end to the experience. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this, especially after talking to others on the cruise who said they shared a bus with 50 people for their own excursions booked through the cruise line.

Thank you so much for your very detailed and fantastic review of the Semi-Private version of the Wacko Taco Adventure. Yes, jumping "pencil straight" is very important! We are so pleased that you enjoyed and appreciated the authenticity of this Adventure which visits Mayapan (known as little chichen itza), jungle Cenote and Maya lunch.

YucatanCenote Eco-Adventures visits a variety of different Centoes on different tours. Some Cenotes have stairs with double railings, while others with single railings. Some Cenotes are deeper to access the water than others. If you have difficulty with some stairs, here are some recommendations:
- Down the Rabbit Hole - tour has double railing and gradual stairs (not steep) and you can wade into the water.
- Hole Echilada Cavern - tour has double railings and two flights of stairs, each about 15 steps and a 5 step ladder to get into/out of the water.
- Holy Guacamole - tour has double railngs and about 30 steps to the water-level.
Photos - If you go on the Facebook Page: Yucatan Cenote - Progreso Shore Excursions , take a look at the ALBUMS. There is an album of photos for each and every excursion adventure tour.
Hope this helps.

Im a little confused to which adventures are the hour bus ride or the 1 1/2 hour bus ride?
Ruth H
158 contributions
The Shore Excursions (for cruise guests):
- "Majestic & Maya" Adventure, that visits Uxmal = 1.5 hours (from Progreso)
- All of our other Adventures = 1 hour (from Progreso)
We do not use buses. We use vans (10 passenger and 19 passenger) . Small private groups and one "shared group" Adventure.
I hope that this helps. Please email us directly if you have futher questions.
Thank you.

I cant decide between the Above and Beyond excursion or the Holy Guac Excursion. The difference is the meal. One is in someones personal home and the other at a restaurant. Thoughts?
Ruth H
158 contributions
The Dfference is a different Cenote and different Dining Experience.
"Above & Below" visits Mayapan Ruins, a Jungle Cenote (cliff jumping, large rope swing & stairs to water-level platform) and a cultural lunch prepared by a Maya family in their home.
"Holy Guacamole" also visits Mayapan Ruins, however a different Cenote (with cliff jumpign, small rope swing & stairs to a water-level platform) and the meal you have an option (at the time of booking). Either: a) a cultural lunch prepared by a Maya family in their home; OR b) luch at a Historic Hacienda on the outdoor terrace or indoor air-conditioned dining room.
I trust that this is of assistance.

The Adventure they did is no longer available , it was Yucatans Backyard Cenotes, it has been overrun by tourist buses, We started calling it the NO FUN ZONE, it has a guided tour where you can't touch anything, no noise, no cliff jumps , no rope swing and up to 100 people in the cenote at a time. `Our goal is to get you off the beaten path and away from the tourist crowds. This adventure does not meet our criteria for FUN and Privacy. All of our other adventures are loaded with FUN and Excitement.

We will be in Progresso as a cruise port. How long are the tours generally? We have booked the Above & Below. Is there a possibility of not getting back to the ship on time?

We ask that you meet us promptly once the ship is in port. As these are private tours, as soon as you meet us, we are on our way to your Adventure. We return you 60-90 minutes prior to the ship's departure.

I am looking for seriously adrenalin rush for My 3, 17-18 year old sons,we didn't want to go to Myan ruins again. Been there more than once.. They are all great swimmers and want something that they will remember the rest of their lives. Memories, before they split up and go different ways this next year... Thank you

You have found the right place! We have a few tours that have adrenaline rushes. Take a look at our YucatanCenote website. You might be interested in the Xplore Xibalba Adventure which explores an underground river cave with incredible rock formations as well as a Cenote (underground lake) that has a cliff jump area. Also take a look at Spiral & Spectacular two Cenote Adventure or we can customize another two-cenote Adventure for you. Please look at the website and use the "Contact Us" form on the site and we can email each other directly. I look forward to hearing from you.

We were looking at booking a tour but I'm so confused about lunch? Where do you go to eat? I'm reading stuff about the hacienda? Is that a restaurant? We were quoted almost $350 for my husband, me and our 6 year old....which sounds super steep. We will be there in January. Will it be too cold to get in the cenotes? Suggestions or advice please. :)

Hi Heather, our pricing is based on the number of guests in your Party, Yes it is more expensive to go out as a small group of 3. The Hacienda you read about is a restaurant with stunning grounds and Authentic food. The cenotes we visit are all 40 feet underground, the water temperature stays between 82 and 86 degrees all year long. Because ALL of our Adventures are Private you are NOT sharing the costs of the vehicle , fuel,or your Guide.
We are confident that if you are looking for a Private , special and Memorable day, we do offer the best Value. There are cheaper "tours" available if you want to spend your day with 50 strangers lining up for everything. Our goal is to get you "off the beaten path" and "away from the tourist crowds" and NOBODY does that better than YucatanCenote.

Hi thanks for the review. Just wondering if the steps down to the Cenote caused any trouble for anyone in your party? We may have older family members in our party.
Thanks,
Tracy

We visit different Cenotes on our various excursions. Some of the Cenotes have easier access than others. We would recommend that you visit our website and complete the Contact Us form. In the contact section mention any mobility restrictions or concerns and we will make recommendations on which excursion(s) best suits your family. Hope to hear from you soon.
Easiest access Cenotes are:
- Down the Rabbit Hole
- The Burrito Grande
- The Hole Enchilada Cavern
