We visited Progreso in December 2024 as our port day with a Disney Cruise out of Galveston. After lots of research we selected Yucatan Cenote Eco-Adventures for our excursion for our large group of family & friends (15 people including 9 children). From the booking experience, to questions and email correspondence with Chris (one of the founders/owners I think), and of course the beautiful day led by our charming guide, Rene, and driver, Jose -- it was all amazing!
For the day, we visited a small town (not another tourist in site) and toured an old church, walked through a market, picked up some local fruit (sour oranges, tasty!), then visited the Ake Ruins, swam in a beautiful cenote (underground cave filled with water, with a tower to jump off of and kayaks, kids were in heaven) that we had to ourselves, and ate a delicious lunch provided by a local family.
One of our hopes was for a private, less tourist-trap experience, and Rene and crew delivered. We had a private van that fit all of us (Mercedes, good air conditioning, and Jose always seemed to pull out a chocolate treat or cold soda/water at just the right time!) Rene was incredibly knowledgeable about the area, history, and the specific sites, and our kids (ages 6 to 14) really put him to the test with their endless curiosity. It really felt like a VIP experience, and was no more expensive than other excursions where you get lumped in with a bunch of other tourists or visit more commercial sites.
Everything about the excursion was smooth, from their remembering the booster seat for our youngest kid, to calling us on the morning of, providing detailed instructions and preparations, meeting us at the bus depot, and having everything we needed for a great day. We took lots of photos and made some incredible memories. We'd gladly rebook and trust this company to provide another great experience on our next visit!

This was an epic tour! The tour guide instructed us on exactly where to go and where they would be picking up our group of 6 people. Once all loaded up in the fan they gave us a run down of the tour and what we would be doing. During the hour plus drive to the first cenote the tour guide gave us a history of the yucatan, myan people and cenotes as well as pointing out significant landmarks on the way. The cenotes themselves are just something you really have to see for yourself, pictures do not really do it justice! Once swimming was complete and we sat down for lunch they brought us a variety of plates to try their authentic food. My only complaint was that they did ask pork or chicken and we all said chicken but they still brought two plates with pork, but otherwise the food was amazing! We shared our plates to get a taste of everything with the fresh tortillas they brought out with the food. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this tour if in the area!

This excursion was the highlight of my families entire trip. I remember the drivers name was Miguel but honestly can’t remember what the guides name was. We went on February 25. It was my family of four and one other couple. After making reservations an email was sent that gave us great instructions along with pictures of where to go once we ported in progreso. Our guide and driver were exactly where they said they would be holding a sign up so we knew we were in the right place. The drive to our first stop was about an hour and 15 minutes away. While we drove the guide gave us a lot of wonderful information about Yucatan along with the ruins we were going to see and the culture of the Miyans. Our first stop was the Miyan ruins which we got to explore. After we were taken to the cenote where we got to swim, kayak, and snorkel. Our guide took pictures of us with his phone and sent them to us via email since I couldn’t take pictures since I was swimming. This was very much appreciated. After swimming we were lead to a beautiful gazebo where they had a table set and a miyan family made us an authentic lunch that was terrific. We were then taken back to progreso. Our guide made sure we knew where the shuttle was to get back into the ship. Absolutely amazing excursion highly recommend!!

Cannot speak highly enough about this experience. There should be a six-star option to rate this experience.
Booked this as a cruise excursion and talked a whole group of people who NEVER book something an hour away from port unless directly through the cruise line into booking this excursion. It was amazing. Everyone loved it and it was the highlight of everyone’s cruise.
The Yucatan Cenote staff were excellent, met us directly at the transportation hub exactly where they said they would be. We had a group of 17 and had arranged a private tour. YC rented a van large enough for all and showed up with the requested car seat (the tour provider in Cozumel “forgot”).
Rene was our guide, and he was great. Talked to us about everything we saw along the way, the towns, the shops, geography, history, culture, etc.
We booked the Poco Loco cenote tour. No ruins. Just cenotes. Everyone had a great time swinging from the rope swing or jumping in from various points. We only had one person in our group willing to jump from the upper rim, but he was able to do it at both locations and loved it.
The original plan was to be back at the transportation hub about 1.5 hours prior to ship departure. But we learned that the last shuttle to the ship was supposedly leaving about 1 hour prior to ship departure and so we wanted a bit more of a buffer. Rene handled this change without any issues, and we still managed to get time in both cenotes and had an excellent lunch.
Rene and the driver brought us back to the hub in Progresso just seven minutes shy of 2 hours prior to the ship departure. Rene then walked our whole group back through the market area back directly to the line to get on the shuttles back to the ship. A true curb to curb service.
Lunch was amazing. The local family that cooked for us was so nice. Really great to experience some different foods. None of our group got sick or had any issues if you are concerned about that sort of thing.
The “jungle road” cenote is just that, a road cut into the jungle. It is quite bumpy and the driver has to go very slowly for the last few KM once you leave the town for the cenotes.
One of the families in our group did not even get off the ship the last time we were in Progresso. Do NOT make that mistake. Book with Yucatan Cenote.
Climbing down into these two cenotes was not difficult but you could not do these two if you have mobility issues. The stairs were well maintained but also steep in some places. No one in our group had any issues getting up or down.
FYI: You can add a six pack of cervesa to the tour for a small charge.

We booked the shared trip but there were only us ( 4 people ) on it - which was great. Communication with the company was very good right from time of booking, with clear arrival and pick up instructions for the port. Our guide (lovely lady, sorry I cannot remember her name) was very informative telling us about current life in the city and Mayan history. As this was a small trip we arrive at the Mayan ruins before the coaches ( which was good as there is only one toilet there) and by the time we left we were the only people in this very special place. Then it was on to the cenote, which again we had to ourselves. This was very magical as it was a cave cenote with incredible stalactites. The water was wonderful. This was followed by a tasty lunch cooked by two local ladies. At no point did we feel rushed on our trip and we arrived back at the port of Progreso in plenty of time for our cruise ship departure

It was an amazing experience from start to finish. Navigating from the ship to the meeting point was incredibly easy thanks to the detailed directions provided in advance. Our guide, Elias, was fantastic. He struck a great balance between sharing interesting historical insights and giving us time to simply take in our surroundings as a family.
We sailed to Progreso on the Disney Magic, and I was more than a little nervous about booking a non-DCL excursion. But it couldn’t have gone more smoothly. We had plenty of time for every part of the adventure and returned to the port with time to spare, never feeling rushed, anxious, or unsure.
This was our kids’ first time in another country, and I truly appreciated how this excursion gave them a more authentic glimpse of Mexico, not just a touristy shopping stop. We explored the ruins of Uxmal, swam in a cenote, and enjoyed a delicious lunch at a local family’s home. It was a day that we’ll always treasure.

We were a family of 15, including 8 children. Our ages ranged from 4 to 67. We were able to book a private tour with transportation in a very nice, uncrowded bus. Our tour guide, Rene, was awesome. The drive to the first cenote was long, but it flew by as we were entertained by Rene’s information and personal stories. The small villages that we passed through gave a glimpse into Mexican rural life. Definitely a learning experience for the kids. Both cenotes were SO gorgeous. The first was open with sapphire blue water. Only a few other people were there. The second one was a cave cenote at a hacienda. We had the entire place to ourself! Lunch at the hacienda was simply amazing. The best Mexican food we have ever had. After lunch, Rene surprised us with a piñata for the kids! I had no idea they were planning this. I can’t say enough about the professionalism of this company. From my first inquiry to our drop off at the end - nothing but top-notch service. I would 100% book with them again! Thank you for a fabulous day!

We had an absolutely incredible experience with Yucatan Cenote, and we can’t recommend them enough! Our tour guide, Rene, was phenomenal — he knew everything about everything. My husband and I learned more about Mayan culture than we ever thought possible, and Rene’s passion and knowledge made the day truly unforgettable.
Our tour included a visit to the Ake Mayan ruins and the stunning Bebelchen cenote. What made Ake so unique was that we were actually able to climb the ruins, which gave us an amazing perspective and made us feel like we had stepped back in time. Then we visited Bebelchen cenote, which was absolutely breathtaking. It’s an underground cenote accessed by a small staircase, and once inside, we were surrounded by stunning stalactites and stalagmites — it felt like discovering a hidden, magical world. Swimming in the cool, clear water was such a refreshing and unforgettable experience!
To make the day even better, once we were done swimming, a local family prepared us an incredible fresh-cooked meal. Everything was homemade and absolutely delicious — it was such a special and authentic touch to end our excursion.
We originally booked the semi-private tour, but since no one else booked that day, the owners were incredibly kind and upgraded us to a private tour at a discounted rate — and it was worth every penny. Rene went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable, engaged, and having an amazing time the entire day.
Since we were on a cruise, we were initially concerned about timing, but we had zero issues. Rene met us right at the bus station where the cruise ship shuttles operate all day, and we were quickly on our way to start our adventure. We even made it back to the ship with plenty of time to spare.
If you’re visiting the area, Yucatan Cenote is an absolute must-do. And if you’re lucky enough to get Rene as your guide, you’re in for an unforgettable day. This experience was hands-down one of the highlights of our entire trip — we would do it again in a heartbeat!

Highly recommend Yucatan Cenote Shore Excursions while in Progresso. Our guide (Rene) and driver were excellent. We went to a private cenote with a twenty+ foot jump that the kids loved. A family made us an authentic lunch at the site. There were only twelve of us so the van ride was comfortable and Rene answered questions as we drove through the small towns/communities. The Ake ruins were not crowded and Rene walked the site with us and took pictures which he later emailed to us. It was well worth the money. I was shocked that it wasn’t more expensive than the tours the boat offered. We felt very safe and made it back to the ship well in advance of embarkation. I’m so glad we took a chance and didn’t book a ship excursion.

We did a semi-private Ruins and Cenote tour and it was great! The instructions were clear and we were able to find our guide and get in the van with no difficulty. We were on the tour with only one other couple, which was great. The Ake ruins were really interesting and our guide Rene was amazing; he was so knowledgeable and friendly. Miguel, our driver, safely chauffeured us around.
The cenote we went to was so awesome- it was just the four of us on the tour, so we really had it to ourselves. It was one of the coolest things I've experienced. The stairs/path to get to the cenote was a little rugged, so this may not be the right tour for anyone who has a hard time getting around or mobility issues. We had a great lunch from a local Mayan family; they served us pork empanadas and horchata - delicious!
We would definitely recommend this company to anyone who is looking for a more private tour without all of the big crowds. Shout out again to our guides, Rene and Miguel. We made the mistake of including our tip at the beginning of the tour with our initial payment, so I'm worried that they didn't get their tip money, even though I tried to make it clear that the extra that was included was for them. To the owner (if you read this) please make sure they get the extra that was for them! :) They earned it!

Can someone post pictures of the access and steps to this cenote? The amount of steps I can do is limited. Wondering which cenote has the least amount of steps. Thanks

YucatanCenote Eco-Adventures visits a variety of different Centoes on different tours. Some Cenotes have stairs with double railings, while others with single railings. Some Cenotes are deeper to access the water than others. If you have difficulty with some stairs, here are some recommendations:
- Down the Rabbit Hole - tour has double railing and gradual stairs (not steep) and you can wade into the water.
- Hole Echilada Cavern - tour has double railings and two flights of stairs, each about 15 steps and a 5 step ladder to get into/out of the water.
- Holy Guacamole - tour has double railngs and about 30 steps to the water-level.
Photos - If you go on the Facebook Page: Yucatan Cenote - Progreso Shore Excursions , take a look at the ALBUMS. There is an album of photos for each and every excursion adventure tour.
Hope this helps.

Im a little confused to which adventures are the hour bus ride or the 1 1/2 hour bus ride?
Written October 29, 2019
The Shore Excursions (for cruise guests):
- "Majestic & Maya" Adventure, that visits Uxmal = 1.5 hours (from Progreso)
- All of our other Adventures = 1 hour (from Progreso)
We do not use buses. We use vans (10 passenger and 19 passenger) . Small private groups and one "shared group" Adventure.
I hope that this helps. Please email us directly if you have futher questions.
Thank you.

I cant decide between the Above and Beyond excursion or the Holy Guac Excursion. The difference is the meal. One is in someones personal home and the other at a restaurant. Thoughts?
Written October 28, 2019
The Dfference is a different Cenote and different Dining Experience.
"Above & Below" visits Mayapan Ruins, a Jungle Cenote (cliff jumping, large rope swing & stairs to water-level platform) and a cultural lunch prepared by a Maya family in their home.
"Holy Guacamole" also visits Mayapan Ruins, however a different Cenote (with cliff jumpign, small rope swing & stairs to a water-level platform) and the meal you have an option (at the time of booking). Either: a) a cultural lunch prepared by a Maya family in their home; OR b) luch at a Historic Hacienda on the outdoor terrace or indoor air-conditioned dining room.
I trust that this is of assistance.

The Adventure they did is no longer available , it was Yucatans Backyard Cenotes, it has been overrun by tourist buses, We started calling it the NO FUN ZONE, it has a guided tour where you can't touch anything, no noise, no cliff jumps , no rope swing and up to 100 people in the cenote at a time. `Our goal is to get you off the beaten path and away from the tourist crowds. This adventure does not meet our criteria for FUN and Privacy. All of our other adventures are loaded with FUN and Excitement.

We will be in Progresso as a cruise port. How long are the tours generally? We have booked the Above & Below. Is there a possibility of not getting back to the ship on time?
Written January 4, 2019
We ask that you meet us promptly once the ship is in port. As these are private tours, as soon as you meet us, we are on our way to your Adventure. We return you 60-90 minutes prior to the ship's departure.

You have found the right place! We have a few tours that have adrenaline rushes. Take a look at our YucatanCenote website. You might be interested in the Xplore Xibalba Adventure which explores an underground river cave with incredible rock formations as well as a Cenote (underground lake) that has a cliff jump area. Also take a look at Spiral & Spectacular two Cenote Adventure or we can customize another two-cenote Adventure for you. Please look at the website and use the "Contact Us" form on the site and we can email each other directly. I look forward to hearing from you.

We were looking at booking a tour but I'm so confused about lunch? Where do you go to eat? I'm reading stuff about the hacienda? Is that a restaurant? We were quoted almost $350 for my husband, me and our 6 year old....which sounds super steep. We will be there in January. Will it be too cold to get in the cenotes? Suggestions or advice please. :)

Hi Heather, our pricing is based on the number of guests in your Party, Yes it is more expensive to go out as a small group of 3. The Hacienda you read about is a restaurant with stunning grounds and Authentic food. The cenotes we visit are all 40 feet underground, the water temperature stays between 82 and 86 degrees all year long. Because ALL of our Adventures are Private you are NOT sharing the costs of the vehicle , fuel,or your Guide.
We are confident that if you are looking for a Private , special and Memorable day, we do offer the best Value. There are cheaper "tours" available if you want to spend your day with 50 strangers lining up for everything. Our goal is to get you "off the beaten path" and "away from the tourist crowds" and NOBODY does that better than YucatanCenote.

Hi thanks for the review. Just wondering if the steps down to the Cenote caused any trouble for anyone in your party? We may have older family members in our party.
Thanks,
Tracy

We visit different Cenotes on our various excursions. Some of the Cenotes have easier access than others. We would recommend that you visit our website and complete the Contact Us form. In the contact section mention any mobility restrictions or concerns and we will make recommendations on which excursion(s) best suits your family. Hope to hear from you soon.
Easiest access Cenotes are:
- Down the Rabbit Hole
- The Burrito Grande
- The Hole Enchilada Cavern

We are sailing out of Galveston on the Carnival Valor on November 12 of this year and who would you advise us to use for the Yucatan Cenote adventure. We are a family of 13 ( 7 adults and 6 children ages 1-8)
Thank you for any help,

All of our Guides offer something unique and special to your excursion. We have both male and female guides, should you have a preference. All of our guides are bilingual (English/Spanish) and enthusiastic.
