There are a few tour options in Progresso, but I am glad we found and went with Sergio's Tours. Our guide's name was Pedro, he was fluent in English and Spanish which was great! We purchased a tour that combined a cenote site/forest, seeing wild famingo's, Mayan ruins, and salt flats. It was a semi-private tour, just the 4 of us and then a Spanish couple. We took a comfortable air-conditioned van, and during the drive Pedro would tell us bits of info, history, and stories about the area and where we were going. First we visited this wonderful natural park area by boat, with winding paths through a mangrove-y forest and 3 cenote's, so beautiful and clear you can literally see every tiny stone at the bottom. We did not expect the cenote's to be like this!! Wish we had arranged to stay longer... But we swam in the crystal clear waters, saw birds, snakes, lemur-like critters, raccoon-like animals, and tons of iguana's - very cool. This was such a nice little hidden away area, I loved it (other than really noisy screaming Mexican children.....). Next, we got back in the van and went to where the flamingo's were, a few miles down the road. Unfortunately, the birds were so far away you could barely see them. You can see from some of my pics, it was a bit disappointing, but that's nature! You can appreciate their privacy and being in their habitat. Do not expect to see flamingo's close up like in the pictures. The closest you can get is 200m away. Next, we went on to the salt flats, which were surprisingly interesting! beautiful salt crystals form on the rocks, which you can pick out of the water - it's very pretty, but they all crumbled and broke by the end of the day. Next, we went to Xcambo - a small site with Mayan ruins. It was fun and we learned a lot - I had never visited ruins before! Xcambo is much older than Chichen Itza, but not as large or impressive. Pedro knew a lot about the history of the site and the Mayans, which he would explain in both English and Spanish. He was fantastic. The whole tour took about 2-3 hours, but I wish we had asked to spend more than 1.5 hours at the cenote area... It was too rushed for such a lovely spot. Pedro then walked us through Progresso and showed us some cool spots to eat and shop. He was so nice, such a great tour guide, so knowledgeable and fun!! I highly recommend you not only seek out Sergio's tours, but get Pedro to take you! A wonderful day overall, highlight of my trip to Merida/Progresso.
