My father-in-law was born in the monastery, which was owned by the Schanche Family for many years along with the adjacent farm.

Utstein Monastery is Norway’s best-preserved medieval monastery and is mentioned in historical records going back to the 9th century. It is a beautiful place with an open courtyard and cloisters. The big room is all brick with curved brick ceilings. It is breathtaking. There are...More

This is not a trip for the kids. This is walking around an old monastery which has had a lot of loving care given to it. We had a 30 minute piano recital which was amazing and I am not a big music fan. The...More

The Utstein Monastery is renowned for being the home and principal seat of government for Harald Fairhair, the first king to rule the whole of Norway. The surroundings are beautiful and worth the visit. Make time to tour the inside of the building complex.

This is such a beautiful place that's rich in history and it happens to be in a stunningly beautiful area. We loved getting to relax looking over the water and also getting to watch some sheep nearby.

Had a nice guided tour trough the monastery in December. A 40 min trip from Stavanger centre. Nice to see such an old building, in such a good standard - and still in use for weddings and church. The guide have stories about the monks,...More

Really enjoyed an entertaining guided tour. Charming location, very friendly service in the restaurant, delicious food. Only gripe is that food could have been warmer (suggestion to restaurant - plate warmers help a lot if other options are not viable). Skilled chefs, friendly and helpful,...More
