Located in the heart of the old center of Draguignan, near the Palais de Justice, at 75, place Georges Brassens, the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions, or ATP, offers 600 m2 of exhibitions, permanent and temporary, on 3 levels , see the circulation plan for the visit of the 16 themes, plus an outdoor presentation, of the gallery of machines, located in the former congregation of Notre Dame du Bon Shepherd, whose buildings date from the 17th and 18th centuries. This museum, in France, was created in 1980, at the instigation of the Association for the Protection of Popular Arts and Traditions of Middle Provence. Its Provençal ethnographic collections became community-based in 2007 and were enriched over time with donations from men and women who lived and worked in the region. These are treasures, from the daily life of the former inhabitants, who bear witness to the activities of the 19th and 20th centuries, through know-how, techniques, and uses, both in agriculture, industry, religion, or the festivities, with oil mill, harvesting tools, plows, harrows and many others. Showcases reserved for silk, Provençal music and the cork industry. This museum has a documentary center and an archeology unit. Its shop offers a selection of books on heritage and local products, such as honey, olive oil, as well as creations by local artisans in Provençal kerchiefs, pottery, soaps, and leather purses. . A real return to the past of our elders.

We had a day in Draguignan and thought this museum might be just the thing to fill some time. We were all impressed by how well organised it is and how helpful staff are. For starters, admission was free because it was heritage day/week. Then the woman at reception urged us to take a comprehensive English translation of the many exhibits. This made the tour through extra easy. Highly recommend taking time to see how France and the region used to live.
