We followed a fairly easy path from the canal side in Hebden Bridge to Stoodley Pike but found it a bit tricky to find our way through the woods at the bottom of the walk. The views from the top are great. We did not climb up the tower itself as it is completely dark and quite steep.
Back along the Pennine Way and along the canal for a round trip of 10 miles or so.

Probably my favourite walk.I've been to this location many times as i've lived in Todmorden all my life.I believe Stoodley Pike was built to commemorate the battle of Waterloo. The hills are beautiful around here and the walk up there is fun with plenty of variation and beautiful scenes of the valley. There are many different ways of getting to Studley Pike. I usually go from Longfield Road via the nicely placed shepherds rest Pub and around the "beach on the hill" Gaddins Dam. I would say this is the longest route, taking around 1.5hours. Going inside Studley Pike itself is quite eerie. It's pitch black and you have to make your way up the spiral staircase. It doesn't take that long but the memory has stayed with me throughout childhood. Soon I hope to take my friends children up to Stoodley Pike to give them the same memories I had. Walking is such an enjoyable way to escape the stresses of life and these hills are beautiful. Perfect for long walks with the dog, with family and with friends. Obviously make sure you are reasonably fit before embarking on this adventure!

Living quite close by we have climbed Stoodley Pike to reach the monument from several different locations, along a variety of different paths over the years. Some ascents are easier than others, some have better paths, some are through boggy ground. It's probably best to research the best route for you before you set off. We tend to favour the approach from the car park at Withens Clough reservoir, along the Calderdale Way passing the Te Deum Stone at Withens Gate, it's quite a gentle climb before reaching the ridge, which is then a flat walk to the monument.
The monument itself sits on top of Stoodley Pike and is visible from many locations around Calderdale. You can climb the stairs inside to reach the viewing platform but be aware it is pitch black, you will need a torch.
There are no facilities of any kind at the top, so I would suggest taking snacks and plenty of water with you. There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the views and a picnic. Be aware that the weather can change quite quickly, bring spare warm clothing, waterproofs and put on sensible footwear.

Recommended by a mate, lovely sights.. 10 mins drive from Hollingsworth lake. Easy walk for anyone looking at a quick fixed to get the body moving again. We was up and down in 2 hours . Could of been quicker but we had all day .. two pubs nearby for drinks and food . We picked a fantastic day weather wise to do it .

Stoodley Pike is such an iconic image of Todmorden that one really must go and visit if you are in the area. Several routes up (easy and more difficult) with plenty of people to point the best way for you.
It is a good walk and challenging if the weather turns but certainly worth the view once there.
People say take a torch to climb up onto the balcony but part of the fun is to feel your way up and down.
In the old days you could go down as well with the disturbing sound of bones cracking underfoot- presumably from lost sheep. This , however, is now closed off so up is the only direction of travel once you arrive.
Take refreshments with you as there is nothing on the top but moorlands.

This monument can be seen in most directions around the area. Standing proud on a desolate moorland hill top. Built of Millstone Grit by Prisoners of War I believe. Huge chunks of rock make you wonder how it was ever built where it was. It’s a 2 hour walk over rough moorland with no road other than a Roman Road which is hardly noticible amongst the bracken. It has a steep staircase, very dark and walking up it you can have a sheep barge into you in fright coming down from the platform built right round it about 15 ft from the ground. Weather beaten it survives the toughest of weather but the view from the platform over several valleys in the bottom is worth the hard walk and effort to get there. But choose your day, the weather can be cruel in the Winter! Take care.

For many years I was the local and District councillor for the Stoodley area in Todmorden and so I know this area well. It is a great walk for young and old with very little in the way of 'steep bits' to contend with. When you reach the pike you get a magnificent view across the Calder valley looking directly over the Township of Todmorden and as far as Cornholme and Heptonstall. In the other direction you can see Emley Moor and Holme Moss and I have even been able to see Stoodley Pike from as far away as Soot Hill in Batley.

This is on one of my favourite local locations, always atmospheric, even in the mist , rain or wind. On a clear day you get spectacular views across the South Pennine landscape as far as the Elmley Top transmitter mast some 20 miles away. Locally you look down on Todmorden, and "the London Road" immediately below which is a stoned track going back to packhorse route days and now part of the Pennine Bridleway National Trail. The Pennine Way National Trail leads to/from the monument, which is actually dedicated to celebrating peace after the Napoleonic Wars. The real bonus is that you can climb inside up a dark spiral staircase with 39 stone steps to reach a great first floor house roof height balcony, where you can walk all the way around the monument and get brilliant views in every direction. I can see the monument from my home garden, and it is a regular early morning 50 minute bracing walk to get up to the Pike ,It never fails to disappoint and with the variable weather and light can often surprise you. Normally early morning I have the balcony to myself, a place for quiet contemplation, soaking in the spectacular natural beauty all around. You have to walk to get to it, (or cycle on mountain bike) . It is somewhere to relish and enjoy once you have taken the time and effort to reach it. a truly special place to linger. On calm days you may see microlites buzzing around, or at quiet times be lucky to see and hear Ravens with their deep cronking call or hovering kestrels you can unusually look down upon .I try to get up their at least once a week , There are a variety of ways to get to it, I like going up from the London Road Pennine Bridleway, then Pennine Way from the north. there are views across to the hill top settlement of Heptonstall , and on the final ascent if you keep to the upper left path, just short of the Pike is a small spring that runs all year round emptying into a stone trough, great place to stop for a refreshing cool local drink. The views, water and access are all unadulterated and free, and will refresh your spirit and clear your head, highly recommended as a stunning location to visit.
