This is a beautiful nature walk along the Elsa river, between the San Marziale bridge (look for the Parco Fluviale Val D'Elsa sign) and the Spugna bridges, in Colle di Val D'Elsa. While technically you're in the city, the trail is fully immersed in nature, with lush vegetation and the flowing, deep green stream going through a series of pools and cascades. You can take the path from either side, but the southern side (starting from San Marziale) has the stronger flow and the more beautiful landscape. The southern side is also somewhat more challenging since it has few very short but steep climbs and descents. The amount of water depends on the season. We were there in mid-October and it was flowing strongly but the water level was low enough for not getting wet at the stone crossings. The walk should take around 2 hours without major stops (for picnicking, swimming etc.) The only reservation I have is that once you reach the end of the trail, walking back to the car through town can be long (2.5 km) and boring, so if possible, use a second car, or figure out how to get back in public transportation. Overall, if you have the time and want to do something else than another hill town or another picturesque village, this is a perfect place.

Most visitors walk this trail during the warm months, when on the one hand it's more pleasant to sink your feet in the Elsa water or even bathe in it, on the other hand the river flow is less, so it makes fords (there are three on the 2 Kms path of the trail) very well walkable.
The river originates in a basin formed mainly of limestone rocks, which typically ensure a significant water flow even during the periods of drought typical of the Mediterranean climate. The most abundant spring is, just upstream of the trail, the one called "Vene di Onci" (see the website sienanatura.net, chapter "Bacino dell'Elsa" - Italian only), which alone has an average flow of 800 liters per second.
This is where the picturesque character of the trail comes from: there is never a real water shortage ..
This sector of the Elsa riverbed is classified, according to the EU categories, as ANPIL, an Italian acronym meaning "Protected natural area of local interest". It shows not only a characteristic hygrophilous (ie humidity lover) vegetation, but also interesting faunal presences. For example, in the first part of the trail (considering the north headtrail as the starting point, the one called “Ponte di Spugna”) the director of the ANPIL - casually met by us - showed us a rocky cliff where hawks occasionally nest.
We started the trail in the middle of winter (January), when visitors are quite rare, and when the river flow is stronger, because the rainwater contribution is added to the abundant springs flow.
This adds to the charm of the place, making up for the fact that the trees are leafless, therefore rather ugly.
However, it should be known that the strong river flow represents an important obstacle this season. The three fords in fact, despite being built by placing a row of huge boulders across the stream, are not easy to pass: in all three cases the boulders are completely submerged by water, so it's impossible not to get your feet wet, if you aren't wearing boots. The first ford (always walking from “Ponte di Spugna” headtrail) can be overcome by getting your shoes wet but in any case without great difficulty; but in the following fords the water level exceeds the boulders by up to twenty cms, and the flow is also strong; so crossing the river, without possibly being really dangerous, is challenging. We have given up ...

August 2023. 10.15 am start. It took us just under 3 hrs . We parked near the pizzeria ( car par). Nice and easy. By 1pm, really crowded. The walk is very nice. We wore long trousers due to mosquitoes but got a bit hot by noon. Beginning of the walk, there were rubbish but afterwards clean. We did not found anywhere to swim. The locals know where to stop for a swim so by then it was crowded. Not for pushchairs or very young children.

We did this hike on Sept 20 which is a Monday. Fairly easy except the River crossings while holding the rope are a bit tricky. Wear good shoes. The blue water Is amazing and makes for great pictures. Finding the beginning point and finding parking are a challenge but just stay patient. We met many nice people - it was not crowded but definitely not empty either. One strange and funny thing … a young man and woman couple completely naked swimming and standing along the water for all to see. People either laughed or walked quickly by.

Hello everybody :)
This is asily accessible path that will lead you through the woods along the river Elsa, takes no more than 60 or 90 minutes (even longer, if you´re a photographer like me) with amazing views end incredible sceneries. Magic woods, fairy tale like, something I wouldn´n expect to find in the heart of the city. The colour of the river´s waters is just out of this world. Very photogenic, peaceful and quiet. Definitely worth seeing, especially nature lovers will probably like it a lot.
Greetings!

Just after the roundabout next to the church of colle di Val d' Elsa you will find the staires to this beautiful path. Put on your walking/ running shoes, don't forget your swimwear and if you like take some food and drinks for a picknick. Some of the waterfalls, water rapids and colours of the water are breathtaking. It looks really like a lagoon and this is how nature is suppose to be so if you go there be nice to mother nature and keep it as beautiful as it is.

It wasnt that easy to find but once in Gracciano by the roundabout over the river there is a small car park. Straight away you encounter the blue river and falls. Totally unexpected to find such big falls and pools here. River is very blue which appears to come from the white silt. Nice walk.

Took the glass elevator down to the street market and then walked over to the Sentierelsa for a hike, swim and picnic lunch. Beautiful, cold, clear blue water with small pools and waterfalls along the way to find your own special swimming hole. Mostly local couples and families, but we felt welcome. Probably only hiked 2/3 of the way from Town, but a nice break from touring towns and churches for our teenagers, and very refreshing to swim and eat after a short hike... enjoy!
