We stopped at the bottom of the bottom of the upper lake. Not many people here this time of year and about 4 years ago I came here during the summer. It was still quiet then. We crossed the swing bridge and walked down the west side of the Lower Movora Lake. There had been a lot of rain, but the path was OK we didn't go quickly and took 1 3/4 hours and returned via the road, which took about 1 hr and 15 mins. Beautiful views and tranquil.

We went there not really knowing what to expect and it turned out to be one of our favourite spots in the whole South Island. Used as a film set in some of the Lord of the Rings movies, the lake and forest scenery surrounded by mountains is spectacular. We didn't do any of the longer walks, just drove to several spots and wandered around watching the bird life and photographing the scenery. Very well set-up camping areas with water and toilets. The South lake is power free, but can have powered water craft on the North lake. Loads of birds in the forests and so pretty with the mossy quiet paths following the lakeside. There is a two and a half hour walk along the South Lake which I'd love top go back and do.

Takes a while to get to on the dusty gravel road but is so worth it. Came here because of Lord of the Rings and so glas we did. Worth having a walk around if you arent camping. Nice way to break up the drive to Te Anau.

Everywhere you go in NZ is dream-like but Mavora is so serene surrounded by mountains and forests. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the quiet. Just make sure you take bug spray because there are some sand fleas about.

Great area with groups and families. Lots of space. Plenty of toilets. The only big negative is the gravel road - about 30kms, which can be hard on a caravan but as long as you take you time the destination is well worth it. Take plenty of inspect location and clothes for all weather conditions. Great for walking or running on trails.

We stopped here with our children and what a truly beautiful place. It is 39km of gravel road to get there but so worth it. We went over the river on the swing bridge to a lovely secluded stony beach and just watched the kids play. The camping area has fire pits and was so peaceful & quiet when we were there. Take sand fly spray !!!!

This is well worth the gravel road to get there. I never knew this beautiful place even existed. If you can find a quiet spot, all you can hear is native birds and the gentle sound of the lake - just amazing!

Wow! What a fantastic place to visit if you want to get away from it all. No coverage, so you really do escape from technology. So pretty and plenty to do. Go well prepared as it's a bit of a journey to get supplies. Toilets are clean and well maintained, great swimming spots, good fishing and boating. Plenty of room to choose your ideal camping spot and good walking tracks to discover. We went with 7 teenage boys and they loved it! Highly recommend...

We visited Mavora lake with our family living in Mossburn. What a wonderful hidden gem. Great place to camp by the lake with views of surrounding mountains. Plenty of beautiful short/long walks to do during a day trip. Hoping to go back or camp next time we are in NZ

About 40kms of gravel road to get there, but the best gravel road i've ever been on, no potholes and no corrugations, we averaged 70kph along the road in our campervan ...(the road between the lakes requires a slower speed)
It only costs $8 pp per night to camp there (tent or camper) which you can either pay by cash at the south mavora stop, near the first toilet you see, (and also a really nice swingbridge a short walk away) or online via the doc site.
The north mavora camping area is HUGE, plenty of places to choose from, up high or down by the lake, in the open or among the trees, plenty of toilets dotted around the place. If you strike a cloudless sky you will get amazing astro photography shots and on a calm day the lake reflections are amazing. Hardly anyone there in winter but packed in the summer.
There is another swingbridge walk you can do at the south end of the north lake which takes you over a super clear river, where you can see big rainbow trout swimming beneath you, after crossing the bridge the walk continues through STUNNING bush, which has robins and riflemen and grey warblers flitting about.
Spend a couple of nights here, its not worth driving in for a look then heading out the same day.
The sand flies are FIERCE!
