Best arrived at by bus, in summer, so one can watch the scenery as you ascend the steep Honister Pass. Serious walkers can circumnavigate Crummock Water, marshy in parts; very atmospheric. Or climb towards the high peaks. Or eat ice cream in the interval between...More

... but absolutely amazing mainly if the weather is good. Be careful of the often treacherous looking, very narrow roads. Still breathtakingly beautiful, un-spoilt showing the best side of the lake District!

We did the 5 mile circular around the lake. An easy, low level walk with stunning views throughout - the good weather helped of course! Beware the tunnel gets very muddy.

We were staying near Keswick, and I’d done part of Buttermere years ago, but only at the end of a higher-level walk. This walk circumnavigated the whole lake. We started from the (fairly pricey) car park next to The Fish pub, but later found out...More

We live close by and often find ourselves either driving or cycling to this amazing place. Lots of walking up the fells or around the lakes. Try paddle boarding on Crummock it’s amazing with the backdrop of the mountains.

There are buses but as we had a car I didn't take much notice of how frequent the buses were. I should thin it is 45 mins to an hour by car
