Simply amazing!

This is a "must visit." Even before you get into the cave it's stunning. Native bush and huge limestone rocks outside are impressive. We only had a small torch and going into the cave was quite slippery in the dark so watch your footing. There was quite a lot of very shallow water to walk through too but some kids had bare feet so it's not too challenging. Can't believe this cave is free. The stalactites, stalagmites and limestone formations are awesome A camera with a better flash than ours would capture the magic maybe a bit more effectively than ours!

Great Night Visit
Mar 2021
Easy to find, 20 mins from Waipu. Gravel road, so drive slow (also, possums at night so slow down to avoid hitting them!!), easy 5-10 min walk. Worms can be seen day or not, but nighttime was brilliant. Take a torch (phones worked fine for us). Go further left in the main cave (wear solid shoes and be comfortable navigating slippery rocks) to see more worms!

Glow worms
Apr 2020
When you get to the entrance take your shoes off and have a paddle, find a nice place to sit, turn your torch off and look up to see the glow worms

It's a cave

Yep it's a cave. Don't go when it's wet as it takes you over some wickedly wet ground which you will sink into.
Once in the cave it's big and pretty awesome.

Amazing free experience
Jul 2020 • Friends
Absolutely loved this experience. I was recommended to go here by a local and I’m so glad I did it. Drive down gravel road for 10 mins, Fairly big car park with a public toilet & free overnight camping option for self contained. Enter through the cave as seen in the picture, walk across the stream to the left and follow it through. Quite an easy walk through the cave, don’t have to go too far to see the glow worms. highly recommend taking a head torch for ease, if not I used my phone light, worked fine to see where I was stepping. I wore wellies and friends wore trainers - wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet as you walk through about 2/3 streams inside to cross over.
Shortly after us there was a guided group going through about 1pm so made us feel at ease that we weren’t alone and going along the right track.
100% do this!!

Free Caving Experience

We stayed here one night, there was limited amount of spaces for self contained vehicles but we were there early for a spot. The area was really nice with the caves very close to the car park and the reserve. We walked in the caves barefoot ( would advise shoes ) and got to the see the glow worms which was incredible and free. Nice little area so would definitely recommend. Would return here with old runners and a headlamp.

Amazing, easily accessed, free

Wow so many glow worms. It was like a starry night in the cave. Entrance into the cave is not difficult at all. A short walk in and there are so many glow worms. The cave entrance is about 300m from the car park. Waipu cave is about 13km off the hight and the last 5ks is gravel. A cannot image any other cave would have more flow worms then this cave and this cave is free. Go

Great time with kids
Jan 2020 • Family
We took our two daughters (6 and 9) to the caves. Thanks to reading the reviews we knew to bring headlights and reef shoes. You will need footwear that can get wet and muddy. There had not been much rain so the water levels would have been on the low side. As such we could just go ankle deep in water if we had chosen that option. Instead we explored deeper into the caves and went to about thigh deep in the water. The glow worms were great and the cave exciting to explore. You do need to turn off the lights and be quiet to get the glow worms to glow fully. Great time had by all. Just remember this is not a commercial operation - this is a DOC site and you need to take responsibility for yourself.
