Small water fall with swimming hole
Feb 2021
A small waterfall and OK, it is beauty but not spectacular. Many of the visitors come here to do water play, swimming hole, jump from the higher rock cliff, a bit dangerous maybe, but a lot of people do this. Anyway, do the visit through short walking track 10 minutes through some steps, and crossing a small timber bridge over the stream, all for free. To reach this place you need traveling through local gravel road though, location is 8 km from Maungaturoto. In the rainy season or after heavy rain the water falls maybe bigger and more attractive.

What a Sight!
Oct 2020
This is a great place to visit, although it is about 6 k's down a metal road. There is not a lot of parking, so it is probably better to go during the week. I am not very tall and in my 70's so found some of the steps very deep.
This trip wouldn't do for anyone that is lame or disabled. When you get to the bottom of the stairs the scenery is absolutely amazing.

Swimming not advised!
Jan 2020 • Friends
Beautiful falls not very far along the track, however there is a sign not advising swimming due to contaminated water

Awesome sight
Nov 2019
About 8 clicks north of Maungaturoto. From the car park, zigzag your way on the track through native bush down to the Aurora River gorge. Cross the bridge and the spectacle comes alive-and it really is quite a sight. Its not the biggest or the highest but they are incredibly pretty.. take your trunks as the swimming is pleasure.

Wonderful hidden gem.......go and investigate well worth it😆
Oct 2019
Really great little waterfall, good walking track and well maintained. One boggy patch close to meandering river but otherwise excellent for walkers of all ages. Big pool at bottom of fall and as it had been raining hard few days before our visit it was thundering down😃.Road has been bought up too scratch so pleasant easy drive to get there, maybe a little tiring walking back up to car park but after seeing those fallswas well worth the effort😆

Easy walk
Apr 2019 • Family
This is a short walk (around 5 minutes) and return via the same track.
Must be an awesome site after some rain, still a good waterfall in the dry period we visited in. In summer it would be a lovely stop for a swim in one of the swimming holes.
Great place to stretch the legs on a road trip.

Information from the DOC website re location:
Piroa Falls is located in the Waipu Gorge Scenic Reserve, signposted on SH1 at the foot of the northern side of the Brynderwyn Hills.
Follow Waipu Gorge Road for about 6 km until you reach the car park and track indicated by a DOC sign. Parking is limited on the narrow unsealed road, care should be taken here.

An easy walk from the parking area on the side of the gravel road
Apr 2019 • Couples
This is an only moderately impressive waterfall. Worth the short walk from the road. We visited in Autumn so swimming in the pool below the falls (as depicted in brochures) wasn’t an attractive option. It’s a pretty and natural spot. We only encountered one other couple during our visit on a Saturday morning. The road is a narrow winding gravel track which requires patience.

Stunning - fresh!

Awesome little falls. Water fresh - took a cheeky dip...worth it!
Easy to walk with kids and jandals. You can walk in the stream closer to the falls.

Lovely waterfall
Feb 2019 • Couples
Went to the Piroa Falls after a dry spell but there was stiil quite a lot of water coming over the 20 metre high falls. A series of upper cascades and a main plunge. The road near the falls in unsealed (north or south) for about 10-15 mins. A 10 min walk takes you down to the pretty falls. Well worth a visit if in the area.
