- Shivam BAgra, India71 contributionsThrilling!Luckily we went on a sunny day, so the rocks were not wet. It is a very tight squeeze in some places, would not recommend for older/claustrophobic people. Even young people should be extremely careful of slips and finding your footings, and watch your head. That being said, it was still a very novel experience to travel in such narrow pathways inside the cave. Would not recommend on rainy days.Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 30, 2023
- vip_foodieBengaluru, India3,683 contributionsDifferent and Unique experience of visiting caves!Meghalaya is home to many caves and this one is most easily accessible and very well maintained and lit from inside. The caves are quite mesmerising and you have to crawl and climb at certain places to make your way through the caves. There are some really good picturesque spots as well. Your feet might get wet if you visit them during the monsoons. Entry fee is quite nominal which is 30 bucks.Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten January 24, 2024
- AmulAwasthyPune, India4,112 contributionsUnique and Must VisitMawsmai Cave is unique and a Must visit. Though Meghalaya is Full of such caves and you have Many options to visit. But Mawsmai is Easily accessible , Not much of the Trekking is Involved. weather outside (lighting) will not affect your visit (Arwah was closed due to poor light when we visited). This was our first cave visit and we were mesmerized. Give it a early morning visit to avoid Crowd and spend good time hereVisited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 2, 2024
- Rima KNoida, India100 contributionsThe cave walk felt like a thriller movie!I'm claustrophobic but I did the cave walk and it was worth it. It was raining, most of it had ankle-deep water, sometimes more but the sheer thrill and beauty of it. I'm glad I did it and so did my 8 year old daughter. My husband, me and her were the only ones inside and it was nothing short of a adventure. Must visit. It is clean, well-lit, they have constructed platforms at places to walk easily, and the photographs come out super.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 18, 2024

Mawsmai Cave is small and easy to visit from Sohara. Cave entry fee 20 per person and parking fee is 20. If you have camera then have to pay 20 for that.
It takes around 30 min to visit Cave. Very beautiful cave and stone formations. Enough light is available inside Cave.
There is one more cave but you can visit with proper gear and Guide as it’s Pretty dark inside.

After visiting the seven sisters fall in Sohra we proceeded to visit Mawsmai cave. After browsing through several stalls outside the caves selling Khasi products and considerably insipid meal that was available around we proceeded to visit the caves.
After purchasing the requisite tickets we tried to enter the caves. It was drizzling outside at that time. We thought that the musty smell at the entrance is due to the atmospheric condition. At that time we noticed many visitors retreating. Some of the visitors even told us that it is not worth getting inside the dark and uneven area.
Despite the warning, we mustered up the courage to wade through the slippery entrance. Before we could proceed a little further, there was a horrible stench. After a bad meal in the nearby restaurant, the foul smell was nauseating. Hence we decided against wading through the puddle of stinking water.

It was raining when we visited the caves and were in two minds to go in or not. But our guide Wesh recommended that we see this cave with water which is also equally delightful. Since he was our guiding angel we trusted him and got into the water, we saw many ppl coming back saying its slippery. With shoes in our hands we glided through the dark icy waters and through the ups and downs of the stones in the cave. We were so glad we did this walk thru the waters and the caves were beautiful ! Its a must visit when in Sohra. Equally beautiful is the walk through the dense patch of tress. At the end of the exit you will see Kasi costumes on hire, go ahead and wear them for photographs for Rs.100 only. The caves are not recommended for elders.

The caves are really an awesome experience. They are well kept but could be better preserved. The nominal fee charged is no match to the experience. Definitely recommend a visit if your anywhere close to Shillong. Its about 2 hrs drive to the caves from Shillong city. Only drawback is the tourists litter inside and outside the caves.(plz use the bins provided onsite to dispose off your waste, thanks)

These are caves with natural formations, that one can visit in the course of a day trip to Cherrapunji from Shillong. While there has been some effort to ensure the caves are lit up without damaging the internal structure, it is quite an adventure to go through the caves. And, it is a fun activity to do with family and friends.
Word of caution though - please do NOT take young children (i.e toddler/infants that cant be on their own) or older adults/senior citizens who find it difficult to walk without assistance. This place would definitely be difficult for them. Also, the caves have a narrow path at many places with only one person able to go through, so it could be a challenge for anyone with fear of closed places. The overall activity itself is not too long, so it is definitely fun for anyone with average health and a spirit of adventure.

There are 2 caves and both are worth a visit. One has to bend, crawl, squeeze through narrow spaces at times but its adventurous and fun. There are tube lights placed at appropriate intervals and hence navigating wasn't difficult. The caves are clean without insects, cobwebs and visible bats. Cave 1 was relatively short while cave 2 was longer and more adventurous. Overall, a must visit for genuine enthusiasts and nature lovers!

Like most of the other mountain caves, Mawsmai Caves are also like stone caves.
Length of the cave, based on the guide map given at the entrance is approximately 150 to 200 meters.
This cave is not a visitor friendly cave.
At two or three places the cave is vary narrow at these places it's height of so low that one has to literally sit and slide forward. Too add to difficulty the floor is uneven. On fact there is no floor and one had to slide from rock to rock. Lack of light does not help.
Those who are not agile and/our have knee problems are adviced to not try it.
Those who can negotiate it have good experience.

Visiting shilling with daughters aged 5 and 12 yrs, can kids manage mawsmai cave, visiting in april 11
Written February 14, 2020
We saw a lot of families with young kids and they managed it. I am not sure how exposed are your kids to caves and hikes. Just make sure that they are dressed sensibly. Be prepared to carry them if they get scared of the dark. I think it’s something as a parent you know your kids better.

Is there any luggage room in Mawsmai Cave to keep my luggages before entering into the cave?
Written May 30, 2019
Hi
Can I cover Dainthlen falls, Seven Sisters falls , Nohkalikai Falls , Mawsmai Caves and Arwah caves in one day from Shillong and overnight at Cherapunji? In what order should it be done please suggest.
Thanks

Hi,
The route to scenic points around Shillong are as per their "circuits". since its hilly terrain the access to them are as per hills. for understating, look at your palm and understand fingers as circuits. Thus at times two places may seem very near but visiting them may mean to travel a lot back and forth.
Secondly, its not clear how would you want to visit and what time would you spend there. if checklist type then any number can be done in a day. If photography and serene type visits, maximum one or 2 place in the morning after breakfast and about 2 places after lunch. we experienced 5:00 pm as cut off time for most places.
With the above, at my opinion, you can plan first to reach at cherrapunjee or other place for night. Start early (say 8:00 am) and visit about 4-5 places in a day experiential way.
for your kind of tight schedule, list down and mark the places to check the route+distances between 2 places. thus you may be able to save time in commuting. Hiring a vehicle would be ideal and remember to discuss with them with clarity as they charge as per circuit.
Though not precise, but hope the logic will help you.

I'm planning a trip to Shillong-cherrapunji-Dawki-mawlynlong in June last week. Given that it's monsoon time, will it be possible to visit the waterfalls in Sohra, Mawsmai caves and the living root bridge? Please provide some help in planning the itinerary..
Thank you.
Written April 15, 2018
Monsoon is a perfect time for waterfalls. You gonna love Cherrapunji. You can cover Mawsmai caves and living root bridge (it depends upon rain, as the steps gonna be very slippery. You will love the trekking towards living root bridge Try to go slowly and carry water, chocolates and dry fruits.
You can cover Dawki from Shillong in a day trip. Also, try to visit India-Bangladesh border and Shnongpdeng. Shnongpdeng is famous for water sports. It is 5-8 kms from Dawki.

You can turn back, depends on how many people are behind you. If you have claustrophobia then I suggest you don't go in. Not recommended for elderly people also.
