Khongjom war memorial, Manipur
Aug 2018 • Friends
Khongjom war memorial is located on Indo-Myanmar highway, 36 kilometers away from Imphal, capital of Manipur. It is a memorial for three Manipuri Meitei Heroes who sacrificed their life in a battle faught between them and occupying British forces in 1891. The entrance is arch like sructure with three pillars with human figures and three cannon, each symboling their three martyrs, then three lions statue, ponds and finally a memorial monument on a hillock made of three high towers. This site is still under construction. We did not find any restaurant nearby. One hour is sufficient to visit this place. We visited it on the way returning from the border town of Moreh.

Regarded by many Manipuris as a place that symbolises patriotism and courage, Khongjom War Memorial is dedicated to one of the warriors of the state, Paona Brajabasi and other warriors who fought against the British Army at the Khongjom battlefield of 1891.

Today, on top of the Khongjom Hill, a war memorial has been constructed and on April 23, Khongjom Day is celebrated in honour of the deceased warriors. A grand 30-feet tall gate will welcome you to this place. The historic site is also a place where enchanting hill, verdant valley and azure sky will welcome you. Yes, the beautiful natural scenery of Imphal can also be seen at this spot, which is around 36 km away from Imphal.

This is another war memorial and symbol of glorious history of the region. This place is grand and beautifuOn the morning of 23rd April 1891,the British armies which had attacked Manipur from three sides coming from Myanmar, Kohima and Silchar fired guns from the top of the hill camp towards the Manipuri camps. The British Soldiers had marched up to the camp here and serious fighting between British and Manipuri soldiers took place at Khangjom. British won the Battle. The British beheaded General Paona who is a legend for Manipur valour and sacrifice. Khongjom Day is observed every year in Manipur on 23rd of April in memories of Paona and other martyrs who died in Khongjom for the defense of their motherland.
This Memorial commemorates sacrifice, valour and spirit of freedom. This Memorial is beautiful and one of the best Memorials anywhere and is located on Imphal Moreh National HighwayThis memorial is being built for last so many years. Good part is that now it is going to be completed. Facilities are bare minimum. The area is big to walk around and you can stroll for around an hourthe place has green grass field , it has a clear water pond on its centre which is very good for taking photos, when you clime up the hills you will see 3 tall tower which stood for the remembrance of 3 mighty warriors of Meitei. You can see the nice gate too.
