The Sun Temple (aka Surya Mandir) is a Hindu temple dedicated to the sun god Surya. The building was apparently inspired by the Sun Temple in Konark. The shape of the temple and the sculptures that adorn the walls imitate a chariot. This temple is quite far from the centre of Gwalior. I’m guessing that if like me you’ve never seen the Sun Temple of Konark, then it's worthwhile coming out all that way to see this.

Gwalior's Sun Temple, dedicated to the sun god, is a faithful replica of the shrine in Konark. Beautifully done in red sandstone, it is dedicated to the eponymous god and stands in the middle of a raised platform. The temple on a chariot is drawn by seven horses and helmed by Surya. The chariot has 24 wheels (12 on each side), and each wheel has 16 spokes. Each detail is architecturally significant: The seven horses depict the seven days of the week, the 24 wheels the number of hours in a day, and so on. The outside of the temple is covered with intricate sculptures of several hundred gods and goddesses, including the 10 avatars of Vishnu. The sanctum sanctorum, with a lofty dome (photography isn't allowed inside), is done in white marble. The shrine is surrounded by well-maintained and manicured gardens, lots of flower patches, and a variety of fauna, from squirrels and birds to stray dogs and screaming peacocks. But for those expecting a structure from an earlier era (like us), the Surya Mandir can be a tad disappointing, having been built as recently as 1988 by the Birla family. Good place for tourists and devotees, average for explorers. 7/10.
