I had read positive reviews about this little museum that is situated in several floors about the tourist information office. You start at the top and work your way down. We really enjoyed the museum - with everything from clothing, to banners and weaponry, and lots of historical information on the area. Lots of examples of the embroidery the area is famous for. A great way to spend an hour or two.

The museum has 7 floors of displays but not a lot is there. It focuses quite a bit on the needle work that used to be done here. There are a few other displays on military and industrial history but not much. It's 7 SF so not too expensive for Switzerland. Can't really recommend it unless it's a rainy day and you want inside attractions. If you like needle work and lace it may be your thing.

Apart from the embroidery, there are other historical exhibits: archaeological finds, and even instruments of torture! Worth a visit, even if you bypass the torture room!

Above the tourist info office. Three floors of area history. Take the elevator to the top and work your way down. Read-yourself handouts provide added detail.

We enjoyed visiting the Museum Appenzell and getting glimpses of some very impressive works by several local artists and craftspeople. During our visit, we saw quite a few paintings and drawings by Johannes Hugentobler, the same artist who painted many of the colorful building facades in Appenzell. His landscapes and still-life works were consistently strong and, in several cases, stunning. We also saw works by other local artists, including several members of the Manser family, as well as some fancy large cow bells, handmade furniture, and a demonstration by a local embroiderer. All in all, the museum offers a nice way to get a sense of the local art and craft culture in Appenzell. It's well worth a visit.
