- dianedinkyDunfermline, United Kingdom1,347 contributionsOk but not a must seeNamibia is a beautiful country with lots of spectacular scenery and wildlife to see. This stop was not one of those instances though. It was a pleasant enough 20mins to go to the top and walk down to the bottom but not a must see. When something is called a canyon you expect more of a...well canyon! The gap was very narrow and nothing like the picture I had in my mind. More a rocky crack that opens out a bit down below. Call me a philistine for not appreciating the rock layers but it didn't mean much to me.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten December 31, 2023
- Dewald RCape Town Central, South Africa3,326 contributionsNon-Strenuous HikeWhile exploring the Sossusvlei area I visited the Sesriem Canyon and can definitely say it is a must-see attraction. It's only a short drive from the Sesriem gate, via a gravel road that's a bit rough but passable if you take it slow. There's plenty of parking available at the canyon, but be on the lookout for baboons and I recommend you don't leave any food in your car that they can see. The canyon itself is beautiful with towering walls surrounding you and providing a nice reprieve from the heat of the desert. Getting down to the canyon floor is short and not too strenuous and at the bottom you will mostly be walking on river sand so make sure you have comfortable shoes on. I really enjoyed visiting the Sesriem Canyon and, because of it's unique beauty, you have ample photo opportunities to remember the experience by.Visited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten January 23, 2024
- Hans LLudwigsburg, Germany194 contributionsNice to go when in the park anywayNot the greatest for sure. But when in the park then it is nice to finish the day with this. Do not only go down but also walk along the edge. Be careful though as you need to make sure not to fall. The walls are high and some rocks might be looseVisited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 10, 2024
- Erik WBedford, United Kingdom223 contributionsFantastic walk. Be careful in the heatThis is a fantastic geological excursion and is extremely interesting. Note that you should be prepared especially if it is hot. Do not go unprepared. ensure you have drinks and comfortable shoes. CAUTION!!! This canyon can flood and if it does it is a flash flood and you can get trapped. This will happen when there has been rain in the Khomas Highlands. Babbons can be present and if they are you may find them climbing on your car in the car park. Do not approach them!Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 3, 2024
- JanOss, The Netherlands14 contributionsNice to see and good to combine with deadvleiWe walked here in the afternoon after we climbed BigDaddy and visited deadvlei in the morning with our 2 young children (6 &9 yo). Plenty of time, easy to combine (we really took our time). The canyon is a very easy doable walk with parts in the shade and sun. Length adjustable to whatever suits you as you entrance via one point and simply turn around halfway you’ve had enough. There is only one intersection (can’t miss is); if you go left its another approx 500 mtr to a tiny waterhole.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 16, 2024
- Toni TNashville, Tennessee3,169 contributionsCanyon View--Watch Out for bird DroppingsThis cute canyon, shaped by thecTsauchab River, can be flooded in heartbeat with sudden flash floods. People walk a short distance and get a feel for the many nooks and crannies. The name comes from "sea" for "six" and "sus" which means "straps" signifying that it look six pieces of animal hide to raise and lower all bucket for water--way back in the day. You can walk the whole 4.5 kilometer (2.75 miles) to the entrance gate of Nabim Naukluft , take a 20 minute walk thru the park, walk onVisited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 20, 2024

we were there in the dry season. only one small puddle below parking lot was left. nice and cool there to. it's a good place to visit, to observe the formations and soil layers water makes. we also walked to the west side, ca. 3 km deep, where canyon spreads up. i'd recommend if you want to intake different landscapes a river makes while looking for best path.

This Canyon is easy to visit and walk through. We were here in the early afternoon and it is too hot to walk here. Go here early morning or late afternoon. It's an easy hike and fun to walk through.

Have been here several times. This canyon is very, very hot at midday; not recommended around midday. The heat is reflected by the walls and the sand is extremely hot. Wear sturdy shoes - don't wear sandals (hot sand).
Visiting the canyon is fun. There are climbing opportunities, but it's tiring to walk on the sandy riverbed. Some places smell extremely bad. The reason for this is the urine of the monkeys etc. We never saw any monkeys there, but they warn about them - so be careful.
Even if it's tiring, it's worth going to the end.

This is a really lovely desert canyon, and many people missed out on its full potential. Rather than just popping down and doing a quick glance, as most people did, we took a long walk down the canyon and were rewarded with stunning wildflowers and a large family of baboons dining in the canyon. Such a cool walk!

This canyon is signposted just in from the main Sousousvlei camp, & after taking the driveway to the canyon (somewhat corrugated & gravelly), park up in the area provided & walk towards the right. You start to go down natural & manmade steps into a very deep ravine carved out from the rocks, it is lovely & warm & sunny, there are even trees growing down in the canyon; we spent about one hour there, it was a lovely hike. There is no charge as you have already paid at the park gate.

Because most people visit the canyon the same day as Dune 45 and Deadvlei, it means it mid afternoon by the time you arrive. This means very little shade in the canyon as the sun is almost directly overhead. Try to visit at another time to do it justice. Not much to see during this time of year, very bare but changes with the seasons.

Sesriem Canyon is a great stop on the way out from the Sossusvlei Dead Vlei site. As a soil scientist, it is a fascinating place to review the geological process of Namibia. Although there was little water when we traveled (and too cold during winter), the canyon and the pools below are interesting to study. During the summer, this would be a great site to break the trip to the dunes, during the winter, it is a great site for those looking at the geological aspects of the area.

We stopped at Sesriem Canyon after visiting the Dead Valley and climbing the dunes in Sossusvlei. Most of our group were already very tired, and did not go down into the canyon. I believe that they lost a lot by not seeing this miracle of nature. The Tsauchab River formed this canyon over millions of years. The length of the canyon is about a kilometer, the depth in some places is up to 40 meters. I recommend going through it all. You will see interesting rock formations; there are many niches in the canyon walls, and layers of various sedimentary rocks are clearly visible. The landscape is stunning, I want to take photos at every step. We visited the canyon in November, the heat was incredible, be sure to take water with you.
