Very interesting and amazing museum about 500 mt from the wonderful Mudima Museum of the Cathedral in Altamura . I suggest the visit also for to know the history of the famous “ man of Altamura “ Neanderthal ( about 150.000 / 170.000 years ago ) .

The site is a few miles out of Altamura, easily reachable by car. Our visit was delighted by the enthusiast Donatella, a very skilled guide who took us is a hug while discovering the exceptional Man of Altamura, describing with passion and knowledge the history, the findings, the cave and, finally, the man himself. Congratulations because this small site is a pearl, well maintained and well driven by great guides.

We had read about the Altamura Man for years (just like reading about Otzi who is much, much "younger"). We were staying in nearby Matera so we seized this opportunity to see the area where the cave is where he was discovered (you can't see the cave) and this great museum constructed nearby. The fantastic thing about the museum is a 3D movie that takes you literally into the cave where you go 90 meters to the spot where skeletal remains of the Altamura Man remain imprisoned in the stalactites, stalagmites, and encrustations of calcium carbonate. Tip: follow directions from Altamura as it will put you on a gravel road for just a short time (and it is a very good road). While you are in the area you can also visit the Pulo di Altamura (massive sinkhole) which has many nature trails and picnic tables. Afterward, we drove into Altamura which is a lovely town - start at the Porto Bari and walk to the Duomo.

I was brought here by my husband who has been previously, and met the manager of the museum, Francesco. We were also greeted by Donnatella who took us round the museum and was extremely knowledgeable. It is incredible that this hidden gem is not more well known. We have stayed in Aturuma before and not known of it. At the end of the tour was the 20 min film that was in 3d. This was fascinating as you felt that you are in the cave discovering the 150,000 year old Aturmura man. I would strongly recommend this tour.
