When the crowds of Matera get to be too much hop on the train to visit Altamura. For a few euros you get narrow alleys and the real Apulia without the crowds. Locals still can afford to live here.
The Metera Central station is across from the red building bus station. E-ticket machine has English options. Fast, clean and easy. The only negative is the level of smoking here - think 1960s U.S.

We stayed a few days in a property located right in the central area. The old part of the city is very pretty and evocative. The imposing cathedral dominates the central square. From the main avenue winds a maze of narrow streets, some of which can only be entered on foot. Worth seeing are the old wood-fired ovens for cooking the legendary bread

The center of Altamura is relatively small and is entirely reserved for pedestrians. In it the visitor will find the most notable areas of interest, including the Duomo, the church of San Nicola (and many other churches), the Palazzo Melodia, the Museo dell'Uomo di Altamura, the Claustro Giudecca, the Palazzo de Gemmis-Cagnazzi and the Palazzo Castelli. This area, thought to have housed human settlements for more than 40,000 years,, was named after the tall walls that surrounded the original city. It has undergone many waves of conquest and domination, by various European and North African cultures.

I suspect that the town of Altamura is not of most people's radar. But, if you're in the area, it is definitely worth visiting the centro storico for a few hours. I would highly recommend taking a guided tour, as the city has a lot of history that would not be otherwise evident. Of particular interest are the claustro's - small neighborhoods of residents of similar background. Altamura is also known throughout Italy for the quality of its bread. So, make a point of visiting the centuries old wood burning ovens and tasting some of the breads and focaccia. They are outstanding !

This is a small city so it was not surprising that is historical centre is small. As is the case throughout this area, things are all closed in the afternoon (making it very hard to find a late lunch) but it comes to life in the evening and the square where the cathedral is located is nice as the cathedral is an interesting structure.

While Altamura may not be on the list for many, we found this walled town to be quite charming. There were lots of little shops and restaurants. One of our favorites was a bakery where we were able to try a piece of the bread that Altamura is famous for. Delicious!! Very beautiful churches and historical buildings.

We stayed there over the Christmas period, the old town is very characteristic and welcoming, can be visited on foot in a short time.
In addition to the cathedral, there are various characteristic views, such as the low arch and the local ancient ovens, also eat well and do not spend much.
City recommended.

A nice walk on a Sunday morning allowed us to appreciate this beautiful historic center, entirely centered on a main street and a square overlooked by the basilica. If you pass by there is a break for a walk, even if you don't go there on purpose.

A truly evocative historic centre, characterized by the typical Apulian stone, very clean and dominated by the elegant bulk of the Romanesque Cathedral and its splendid narrow streets and its characteristic cloisters (more or less large squares delimited by houses). In short, a historic center (with 3200 inhabitants) that absolutely deserves to be experienced.
