Another Reminder

This small cemetery is beautifully maintained. There are so many around the area of the Somme ~ some small and intimate and some huge. But all are in memory of the brave souls who fought and died

Came here again as staying in the area.
So peaceful
Had spent the day walking around the area, which put into perspective just how much these lads had to endure.

Never forgotten

There was one grave site I hoped to visit during our trip. It turned out to be in this beautifully maintained small cemetery. It was an honour to pay our respects by signing the register stored in the memorial cairn. And touching to read the entry by a nephew and his family who had visited the same grave earlier this year.

Right on the edge of Albert on the main road, you pass it as you approach the town. 327 lay to rest including 1 x MM.

Discreet place always immaculate

This cemetery is so very typical of the many small sites that are so frequent in the Somme battlefield. Everything is in its place, quiet and with different flowers depending on the time of the year. The clear boundaries are marked by the standard CWG walls and you can often see these sites from a distance when on another road which makes them easier to visit.

A very pretty small cemetery

The Bapaume Post cemetery is located on highway D929 just past the roundabout on the east side of the town (if you're going to be visiting a lot of cemeteries I would strongly recommend downloading the Commonwealth War Graves Commission app - CWGC - as it contains directions, cemetery info and more). It's not a large cemetery containing just over 400 graves but the setting is quite pretty and as is the case with all of the CWGC cemeteries immaculately maintained. There is a detailed information panel about the cemetery at the entrance and there is a pullover off the highway where you can park your car. Soldiers from most of the Commonwealth countries are buried here.

Shocking introduction to what awaits you!!

This was the first cemetery I visited on the Somme and it was terrible to see the numbers of chaps from the Tyneside battalions here. It's the first cemetery out of Albert on the Bapaume Road and within a few hundred yards the road crosses the Tara - Usna ridge and you have the panorama of the Ovillers / LaBoiselle battlefield laid out before you. It becomes immediately clear where and how so many of the men in the cemetery died. A sobering place!

Beautiful WW1 Somme Cemetery Albert

Bapaume Post Military Cemetery is a beautiful little Cemetery on the North East edge of the town of Albert. It sits at the bottom of the main road (Roman Road) between Albert and Papaume. The location is one minute walk from the nearby Ibis Hotel. Well worth a visit.

another great example of a miliatary cemetery maintained with care and respect. Unfortunately one of many seems like every road you take has one or indeed more..never again
