The beach was great...just the right amount of people...quiet but not empty. The water was beautiful. We rented a jet ski from Ellis. He was professional and friendly and took his time to show us the ropes. He was patient with us and courteous. Highly recommend him.

This beach is a calmer beach in the area because the city put rocks to slow down the rough waves coming into shore because in Barbados the waves are bigger than most islands. It is a nice area to rent a condo, quieter less noise because the condos are far away from the noisier areas like Oistins or even St. Lawrence Gap.

I have been coming to maxwell beach for the last 6-7 years. It was one of the best beaches on the south coast. A long strip of pristine white sand shared by two hotels. Yes it has waves, not the lappy type you get on the west coast but real waves. I have been taken out by them on occasions - you just have to treat them with respect.
But apparently the Americans can't cope with waves so sandals, who have bought the hotel at the end of the beach have decided to destroy the long pristine beach. They are building a set of breakwaters and lagoons to create lappy waves so their American clientele can paddle. The beach is destroyed.
Unfortunately they have picked the one time to do this when the seaweed has come and the breakwater is stopping it clearing off as the current moves along the beach and then off the end of the island. As a result the lappy lagoons are cesspits of rotting seaweed.
So well done sandals for destroying what was a fantastic beach you have a big apology to make to Barbados and just remember there are no private beaches is Barbados you don't own it.

Stayed at Sea Breeze which has direct access to the beach. Although the beach is not private it is mainly used by hotel guests. The hotel has lots of sunbeds mostly with pull over canopies which were very comfortable. The sea has waves but when we were there they were not so rough to stop you going in. The beach has powder white sand and is clean.

If you are looking to swim I would go to the west coast of the island. This beach is great for sun bathing, but can become very rough. Overall, the beach is clean and not overly crowded. If you are bringing your children here make sure to keep an eye on them in the water.

When folks travel to Barbados, tourists tend to focus on Accra or Crane Beach. Of course we checked those beaches out, along with many others. But ultimately we kept coming back to this one. We happen to run into it by happenstance because our Air BnB was right next to this place. My husband and I are budget travelers and we tend to stick around places where we can stretch our dollar. This beach, otherwise known as Butterfly beach, was perfect. It's right next to Oistins, where you can walk about 7 minutes for cheap, delicious, island style food. $2 beers (Barbados dollars) are common in Oistins! I recommend you do what we did: buy a cheap floatie from where ever you are traveling from (we went to Target), pack it in your luggage, and inflate it at the beach, but not before buying some rum at the grocery store about 5 blocks away, and hang out and ride the chill vibes till you get hungry for fish tacos!

Absolutely fantastic, clean beach, one of the most beautiful on the west coast of Barbados! Go try to catch the sea turtles coming out of the water at night!

This beach is quite isolated the waves can be a little rough here not ideal for small kids. The sand is lovely. Turtles sometimes seen here.

My wife and I have been going to the Barbados for a number of years and without a doubt it is the best beach on the island. I should mention though if you have little ones with you make sure they are supervised at all times it does get rough. We have taken all four of our grandchildren with us and had no problem but again stay alert and know where they are at all times. Water in the Barbados is amazing with the warmth and colour. We have been to most beaches on the island and if you want calm waters the west coast is where you want to be. I found the west coast waters very boring and had so much more fun at Maxwell Beach. There are a number of good hotels on the beach including Sandals but that is to pricey for me. If you decide not to stay in the vicinity of Maxwell Beach make sure and set a day aside to spend there it is exciting. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
