Not allowed inside
Jul 2021
Bampton is a lovely village, we wanted to visit the church and go inside but although there was no service and very quiet (there was nobody else around accept a lady working in the church) we were not allowed to take a quick look. Very dissappointing as we had made a special trip there.

A Classic British church.
Oct 2019
This church has it all: history and beauty. Built on the high point of the village it incorporates the life of the village plus a faith in something more. As a bonus. you get the Downton connection. What's not to iike?

Good large Church

Large church sometime available for RC masses as well as the normal Church of England services which make excellent use of this building. It is in a very nice setting s=in Bampton.

The Downton Mile
Aug 2019
Bampton is about an hour north of Highclere Castle, far beyond what a Downton Abbey fan expects...but is so worth the additional visit. There is a "Downton Mile," but I was most interested in St. Mary's Church, Mrs. Crawley's home...and the Bampton Library (Downton Hospital).

If you visit early enough in the day, you will avoid the tour buses. My daughter and I had about 2 hours to ourselves on a Friday morning. It was so quiet and peaceful. Loved every minute! The church was just lovely...and I had a nice visit with the caretaker. I highly recommend.

Peaceful and unpretentious

Beautiful church; so serene I was able to sit ponder and admire it, without crowds of people around me. Made famous by the Downton Abbey tv series, but without the pomp and circumstance we saw during the show. It’s a working church, but I sadly missed the actual service. Well worth a visit, for the mere historical aspects and beautiful architecture. The grounds cemetery has beautifully carved tombstones; no Crawley site, if you’re looking for that. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this lovely church. You will too and I highly recommend it.

Lovely church
Aug 2019 • Family
A lovely church, a cool respite from the heat of an August day. The atmosphere was peaceful, and on looking round it was clear to see why. The church had displays about prayer and encouragements of scripture. This was heartening given that it could have been given over to Downton memorabilia. Thankfully there seemed to be the right balance!

A charming little church in a sleepy but beautiful little typical old English town
Jul 2019
Coming here to Bampton is like stepping into a classic English TV series from the BBC to a world where time has stood still for the past forty years and life has taken a nice break ... We as tourists are the only thing that generates stress in this beautiful environment - a village that would not have been the goal of any tourist if it were not for the now world-famous TV series Downton Abbey, where many exterior scenes were recorded precisely in this idyll. Of course, the village has a small church too and it is just as charmingly rural as one would expect. If you can - get here with your own car (or municipal bus); to visit the village together with a busload of tourists become a little surreal and not so genuine ...

Uninteresting and Bland Interior
Jun 2019 • Solo
St. Mary's Church has an unspoilt and imposing exterior with a tall dominating tower. The setting of it is rather picturesque. However, when I visited the church, I found the walls of the interior very dull, grey and bare with not a lot of interesting historic memorials or plaques. Also, the church had a modern looking toilet which was locked which is slightly frustrating despite the fact they get lots of visitors to the church who may use it! The pipe organ had been taken away for repair and has been replaced by a hopefully temporary electronic organ which looks hideous and doesn't look nice, historic or blend in any way. The church seemed a bit sparse and if you take away the Downton Abbey link, then it's just another village church. Overall it was just a bit disappointing and boring.

Nice visit
Jun 2019 • Couples
Bampton was one of the stops on our Downton Abbey tour. There were many DA filming locations in the village, including the church. The church was the site of weddings and funerals, and the cemetery was also in the series.

The church is very pretty inside and has stained glass windows. A couple weddings had taken place in the days before our visit and the church was filled with beautiful flowers and it smelled like a florist shop!

Ancient church

Ancient church given to the town by William the Conquerer! Beautiful stone church where weddings and funerals are filmed for Downton Abby.
