It was quite an experience walking into St. Mary’s church. It’s an absolutely lovely church and it was a wonderful pilgrimage to a place that we had seen so many times on Downton Abbey!

The setting of St, Mary's is perfect! In the center of the village and on a hill, the steeple can be seen from afar! The surrounding graveyard is impressive with graves that are over 300 years old.

Bampton is a lovely village, we wanted to visit the church and go inside but although there was no service and very quiet (there was nobody else around accept a lady working in the church) we were not allowed to take a quick look. Very dissappointing as we had made a special trip there.

This church has it all: history and beauty. Built on the high point of the village it incorporates the life of the village plus a faith in something more. As a bonus. you get the Downton connection. What's not to iike?

Large church sometime available for RC masses as well as the normal Church of England services which make excellent use of this building. It is in a very nice setting s=in Bampton.

Bampton is about an hour north of Highclere Castle, far beyond what a Downton Abbey fan expects...but is so worth the additional visit. There is a "Downton Mile," but I was most interested in St. Mary's Church, Mrs. Crawley's home...and the Bampton Library (Downton Hospital).

If you visit early enough in the day, you will avoid the tour buses. My daughter and I had about 2 hours to ourselves on a Friday morning. It was so quiet and peaceful. Loved every minute! The church was just lovely...and I had a nice visit with the caretaker. I highly recommend.

Beautiful church; so serene I was able to sit ponder and admire it, without crowds of people around me. Made famous by the Downton Abbey tv series, but without the pomp and circumstance we saw during the show. It’s a working church, but I sadly missed the actual service. Well worth a visit, for the mere historical aspects and beautiful architecture. The grounds cemetery has beautifully carved tombstones; no Crawley site, if you’re looking for that. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this lovely church. You will too and I highly recommend it.

A lovely church, a cool respite from the heat of an August day. The atmosphere was peaceful, and on looking round it was clear to see why. The church had displays about prayer and encouragements of scripture. This was heartening given that it could have been given over to Downton memorabilia. Thankfully there seemed to be the right balance!

Coming here to Bampton is like stepping into a classic English TV series from the BBC to a world where time has stood still for the past forty years and life has taken a nice break ... We as tourists are the only thing that generates stress in this beautiful environment - a village that would not have been the goal of any tourist if it were not for the now world-famous TV series Downton Abbey, where many exterior scenes were recorded precisely in this idyll. Of course, the village has a small church too and it is just as charmingly rural as one would expect. If you can - get here with your own car (or municipal bus); to visit the village together with a busload of tourists become a little surreal and not so genuine ...
